My wife always mocks me when I'm on "My watch forums", tuts every time I pause as we walk past a window with watches in, etc etc, you get the idea. Well I do persevere and try and get her to like this hobby of mine. We have sat at looked at watches on the Net, I always look at the ladies whenever she shows any sign of interest in the hope she goes "I'd like that one!" What would be more satisfying than buying a watch for your good lady rather than oneself? Anyway, today I was showing her some pictures than John Holbrook II had taken on the Rolex reference page he has and I showed her the Submariner and asked what she thought of it.
"Its really nice, I like it. It the real version of that piece of crap knock off you've got on" I was wearing my Alpha at the time.
"This isn't a knock off" I said laughing.
"It is, its trying to be something it isn't, face it!"

I was thinking of asking her to contribute to the Ocean7 LM-7 / Proplof post, but I think she has summed up how she feels about homages. And it isn't wise to argue / debate with a pregnant woman with all those hormones surging about. I've had my nose broke once. It hurt. I don't want it breaking again.

My wife always mocks me when I'm on "My watch forums"

When my wife sees me on the forums or looking at watch pics, she always says "I see you're with your secret lover again...". Though she kids me about it, she's pretty good about indulging me in my watch habit. In the end, I guess she realizes that it's better to have me home reading about and buying watches than out drinking every night, playing 5 rounds of golf a week, buying expensive cars, etc. ;-)

Wait 'till you start taking her in to look at new Tarantulas!!!!

I feel the same way she does about "homages" and recently got into a discussion on the publu forum I wish I hadn't- I don't want to insult anybody here. :-x

So.... you going to get her a Sub????:-d

This, boys and girls, is what we call "Rationalization"... It is a way that someone can justify just about anything...

Here's how it works. Pick a behaviour or an action. Like you just spent your Christmas bonus on a used watch... Then come up with a reasonable sober explanation for why that decision makes perfect sense:

"Well, I could have blown it at the Bar and rented some alcoholic beverages."
"Hey, It's better than doing drugs with that money!"
"At least I'm not chasing after fast women..."
"I can always sell it and get my money out of it [well, most of it]."
"If I had bought that Red Convertible I'd just wrap it around a tree."
"Can you imagine the fit she'd have if I bought season tickets when all the games are televised?"

You can justify anything with proper Rationalization!

Now you try one...

John Holbrook was banned from WUS 4 years ago for a bad behaviour by the former moderator Jean Michel, he was not very bright.

It looks like your wife is strongly encouraging you to buy a new watch... stop being selfish and do it for her.;-)

Fergie, Sounds like she's a prime candidate for a sub! Go ahead and pull the trigger. She doesn't like the bracelet? Can't get it sized small enough? Have no fear! Have I got a strap for her......................Here, let me post a pick for your viewing pleasure...................David

Chuck, I tried the rationalization approach and it didn't work. (although I didn't get my nose broken! Poor Fergie.) My missus just doesn't get the WIS thing and comes up with a whole set of counter-rationalizations ie a list of stuff I could have spent my money on instead.

"You could have used that money to get a new boiler"
"You could have put that money towards the new bathroom"
etc
etc

More recently though I've had some really interesting counter-rationalizations. Just yesterday, when showing her a pic of the 50th anniversary moonwatch she said "you could spend that money on a new Digital SLR and a plasma TV". I've decided to strike while the iron's hot and am off out next weekend to buy some new toys.

Hmmm - seems like I'm getting the short end of the stick at home. I'm looking at getting the Speedy Pro as a gift to myself for being promoted at work and my wife (who turned 40 recently) started saying "Can we afford to redecorate the dining room, get me that eternity ring and buy this watch?"

So, Chuck, you can't always justify anything when the response is "Why did you spend that money on yourself when you could have spent it on me?"

Wisdom like that is great .. As I have said before after months of surfing the forums etc . I was going to get a used Speedy and she looked over my shoulder one night while drooling over the Omega page ..I feel a hand brush past my face , finger pointed at the screen ... " BACK UP " she says ... I back the page to the PO 45.5 Orange .... "Thats it , That's the one you need to get" .. the next thing she said was "get ahold of that greg maddox guy or whatever his name is and have him get you that dealer guy and get that one or you'll end up complaining about it forever " ... and that is the true real story of how my wife picked out my PO ... last week though she told me I need to start saving for a Speedy Pro because she wants a new diamond and something about fair play ..... Sometimes it pays to listen to the wife

This should be the poster child for rationalization, just a little reinforcement on your previous statement, Chuck. And I think this does it well. David

Whoops! I forgot a step in there. You buy the object before you have to say any of your rationalizations to anyone but yourself. That way the deed is already done.

["I can't take it back, they'll want a 20% re-stocking fee! And that'd just be throwing away that money..."]

The down side is that others in your family can catch on to this and start using it too, and with women [sexist-but true statement] can usually get away with even less logical rationalizations:

"It looked so Cute!"
"I need 16 different types of every style of shoe because of four seasons and four heel lengths... Oh! and I need sandals too! Oh and open toe and closed and..."

and kids:

"But he followed me home, and he looked so sad, I'll feed him and walk him and house-train him! PLEASE!!!!"

I guess upon reflection, it is a bit of a double edged sword... Hmmm...

My girlfriend is sick of going to the Watch ADs with me at the malls. She said PO is too old and SMP is too ordinary. She likes the Fortis B-42 marinemaster. What should I tell her :-s

John Holbrook was banned from WUS 4 years ago for a bad behaviour by the former moderator Jean Michel, he was not very bright.

I was referring to his photography skills, not his intelligence. In fact he has gone and built a very good forum, (that a lot of members here use) and the Rolex and Seamaster Reference pages are very informative.

That's how I got my SMP. I was trying to save some money and was looking at Longines and TAGs instead. I showed my wife the Omega and mentioned wistfully that was the watch i really wanted. She simply said, "There's no comparison. That's the one you have to get."

LOL, good one Eric. Man has to be a man---- when the wife or girlfriend let them. I say you do what I do, send them away for a few weeks and get on with all those things you like to do. And when she get back and you have a half dozen or so POs on the dresser ask for forgiveness.
