I'm looking for a different strap for my newly acquired 48. The previous owner had a nice light colored calf strap on there that is nice and thick. Unfortunately he or someone else wore some kind of cologne and the strap reeks. I'd really like a new one that is on the thick side but which smells like sweet fresh leather thank you very much! Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Also, I'm a bit confused by the number designations that I have seen on a few sites such as Don's. My 48 has 22mm lugs so why do the straps have two numbers such as 22/24 and 22/22? And when they give a length such as 135 how are they arriving at the total length? Do you place the two pieces end to end and take the measuremnt that way or do you need to measure your wrist or what?

Hi Pete, first of all, congratulations on your PAM 48. I must say, it is a GORGEOUS model, I own one too! :-!
I will send you a PM on who you can contact about straps.
With regards to your question about strap measurements, the first number is the lug width. The second number is the buckle width. So 24/22 would mean that the strap is 24 mm wide at the end of the watch, and it tapers to 22 mm at the end of the buckle. This would be the standard measurement for the 44mm models.
The PAM 48, which is 40mm, would measure 22/20.
As for the length, manufacturers would give two numbers as well. For example, a 75/115 would mean that the short end of the strap (excluding buckle) is 75mm, and the long end is 115.
Hope this answers your question.
Best regards,
Lia

Thanks for the replies! That explains alot and takes the mystery out of it. I have checked out the links and a few others and am gradually working my way to a decision... :)

on paneristi.com, at the bottom of the home page.
Smelly leather straps can be rescued with a bit of work with an automotive leather restorer, check out the local auto supply store.

David, I couldn't find the reference you mentioned...won't a leather conditioner darken the strap?

very informative guide to straps.

As for the leather cleaner, I use Zymol, which is used by Mercedes and Porsche: very high quality and does not darken the leather much at all. Great for conditioning and getting rid of odors. Any auto detailing or restoration store should have a few choices.

Thank you David! Will look for it. I'd like to save the strap that came with it if possible because it is very nice quality, just stinky.
After extensive strap browsing I ended up ordering a couple of straps from Don. I just can't see dropping the big bucks on some of these things without seeing them first. Or at least once I get these maybe if I want to step up a bit Ill have a better idea of what I might be getting.
Thanks for all the good advice folks! :)
