Hi, first post...
Im deciding between a Breitling Colt II Automatic and a Tag Heuer Aquaracer Automatic (both S/S with black faces). I realize there is a huge price gap between the two, but id like some opinions on them. I can seem to find any info about the tag's movement, so im guessing its some kind of plain-jane type deal (?). Then theres the Omega Seamaster, but I dont really like it very much, so lets leave that one out of the discussion.
The Breitling is the one I have my heart set on, as I love the way it looks. Plus, imo it is a much more prestigious brand (hey, if im spending a lot of dough it matters to me).
I just cant seem to get over the price difference. is the Breitling that much better? Online it seems the Tag can be had for about $1150, while the Bretiling is close to $1800.
Also, if prefer to buy the Breitling from an AD to assure its authenticity (I found the Tag for a good deal on amazon, but would be happy to buy from an AD if the price was right). Any suggestions for me? Im in the Los Angeles area. I have no idea how the dealers are with discounting.
Oh, and this is my first expensive ($1,000+) watch purchase if you couldnt already tell. Im 25 years old btw, and have a feeling that there will be some "Tags are younger" responses. I kind of agree.
Thanks

Arrrgh. I though you meant between two BREITLINGS.
Well..........It's got to be the TAG every time, cos if you've got to ask then your not really a Breitling kind of person.;-)
We have to keep the brand exclusive you know:-d

I don't know if this will help but here is my .02.
I first bought the Breitling Colt auto, somewhat out of ignorance. I did not look further into the brands offerings. Within two weeks I had a second and in the next eight months I had four more. All of my subsequent Breitlings were many K's more BUT, I still wear the Colt often and still could not be happier with my "MISTAKE". The watch keeps excellent time, is worth, on the used market, what I paid for it and, the most important thing, brings a smile to my face each time I see it.
Get what you feel comfortable with just remember that you can have this for many years and have something to leave to a loved one you can be proud of. No pressure here!!!

Breitling for me and I'm not biased I own Tag and Omega although Breitling is in my sights.
The Aquaracer to me looks cheap and is.(compared to Omega and Breilting) Spend the extra and get it right up front.

Thanks for the replies. I think ill just try to find a good deal on the Colt sine its the one I really want. No point in spending over a grand on the Tag when its not even the one I really want.
Now I just have to find a dealer that is willing to give a first time buyer 30% off....

Is this even a serious question? IMHO, you can not compare a Tag to a Breitling. It would be like saying which one should I get, a Chevrolet or a Cadillac. Not that Chevys aren't good cars, but you can not compare them to Caddys.

Yeah, I figured. It was just whether or not I was willing to "settle" for less.

Do yourself a favor and just slip both watches on and if the Breilting doesn't scream better watch, nicer fit and finish, much smoother bracelet, far better movement I would be amazed. Very few Tag watches really get my blood up anymore, they just seem to have lost the design edge of their earlier models in favor of celebrity endorsements and pumping out watches.

I ended up with the Colt Auto black face. After seeing the Tag in the window, I didnt even bother trying it on. It just looked inferior. They had some nice really nice Tags, but imo, that wasnt one of them. Nice, but not close to any of the Breitlings.

I'm 24 and have two Breitlings, I let my younger brother get the Tag Monaco. ;-)
I don't think Tags are "younger" necessarily, some of their lines are more trendy and in the now whereas Breitlings have classic lines and won't age.
Ignore the price difference and get the one you want. Don't buy the Tag just because it is cheaper than the Breitling, get it if you really like it! When I was getting my first nice watch at seventeen I was keen on getting a Tag or Omega and spending around the 800-900GBP range. After taking a look at some Breitlings I decided that was what I was after. It was 1100GBP so more than I was initially looking to spend but we managed to get 10% off paying cash. After seeing the Breitling and knowing I preferred it getting the Tag/Omega seemed a waste of money.
In the US you should be able to get a 15% discount on the MSRP pretty easily.

I've had a Tag and looked at them in person many, many times. Just my opinion: As far as the movement, if there is a difference I don't care about it. You buy a luxury watch for fit and finish and all-around beauty. Breitling will cost a little more, but it blows Tag away on those points.

really like the Colt. It's a nice size at 41mm.
Aquaracer does nothing for me. Just my 2 cents.

I had the colt, but exchanged it for that exact reason. the size was perfect...but I like mine a bit large. The colt was probably my correct size though. I swapped it for the much larger Steelfish. Big difference.
On a side note, I dont think the colt auto is actually 41.1mm. It was identical in size to another of my 38mm watches. Plus, the Superocean chrono that I compared it to at the store was clearly larger at a claimed .9mm more (42mm).
