View Full Version : How do you store your watches?

Today I found at the flea market in Lyon, the small cabinet I had more or less in mind to store some of my beloved watches and their accessories :

http://img500.imageshack.us/img500/7284/watchstation006r6sk.jpg

When I saw it, I readily realized that it was the exact style and size to install it above my small watchmaking place which is now a sort of "watch station"....:-)

http://img500.imageshack.us/img500/7789/watchstation010r8pb.jpg

It was restored already. The windows are new but the rest is likely quite old. I like the diamond motif on both size. I installed it 30 cm above the desk to keep the top space available.

The watches with no original boxes are stored in boxes for the 6 to 12 waches.

Of course this not sized for huge a collection...

And you? How do you store your watches?

For the watches i wear regularly i stock in watch box (bought in germany to stetefeld design)

For the collection serie i put in special watch roll or wallet in simili leather
For all which are no yet with a strap, in put them in vrac in boxes (with bubble film protection)

The pocket watches are for some (the more beautiful) in box with display, the others arewaiting a new box.

With the system of stetefeld, you can put box in drawer or put the box in pile and on the top put transparent top :-S
I have to buy new rolls, new straps and new boxes

I use Jeweler-style storage/display boxes, specifically boxes with 24 small divisions for wrist watches and 12 divisions for pocket watches.

I bought this display cabinet from IKEA before last Christmas to store all my watches, and I diplay my watches like the one in a watches shop (..and window shopping is a good therapy to reduce stress :-) )..this pic below taken on end of december.

Since I have more Vostoks than Poljots, I put them in 2 tiers (top and 2nd tier)..Pics below are taken after I "decorate" the cabinet..Still working on some ideas, though...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v355/tiyok/tickingrussian/IMG_2331A.jpg

The 3rd tier is for Poljot, 4th tier for Raketas, Slavas etc and the bottom tier is for reference books and boxes.

It seems that I need more cabinet(s) or shelves as I realised that this cabinet almost have no space for new arrivals.. :-D

I have been buying them for the past several years in lots of 5 or 6 for each size from the seller -- jwarnerhorton. He has several variations, including white or black, leather or fabric, etc. He also has many other kinds of storage and display boxes for watches. Check out his offerings on eBay. He generally has a fairly complete range on offer.

If you are buying more than one, you can usually write an email and buy direct for the auction starting price (or, depending on quantity, even a bit lower) without going through the hassle of an auction.

PS - The capacity of the boxes I use for wristwatches is 18, not 24.

Having more than 200 watches (and few space where to store them), i must store them in a quite "miscellaneous way". They are all stored in my chest of drawers near my bed anyway. I use an official jeweller's Baume & Mercier display box to store the best pieces (chronographs, etc). Some original Vostok, Raketa and Poljot boxes are hidden in the remaining space behind that box. Other watches are stored in another jeweller's Vremja (Bpema) box.
Many Vostoks are stored in two jeweller's folders (of course "personalized" by me). The Elektronika watches are stored in a customized wooden box, originally made to store spices. Some pocket watches are stored in a chocolate box :-X The Olympic collection is stored in a customized old folder for office.
All that stuff costed me zero Euro ;-) I was thinking anyway to expose the watches in a cabinet, but they would be more exposed to the dust and i don't want to keep them in vertical position, to preserve the health of the gears.

All of your awesome collections astound me! :-p

My biggest question is how do you get your wives or girlfriends to go along with that many watches? :-S

I agree, How do you get by the spouse with all that? I'm still hiding watches at the office. You have hundreds, I only have 15.

Holy crap...these collections make mine look sick! Awesome indeed. My girlfriend knows about my addiction...I tolerate her (crappy) beanie babies and she tolerates my russian watches. (Psst...I lie about how much they cost);-)

You all have some great collections!
As for me I have between 20-30 watches, all stored haphazardly in a gun safe.
I plan to store my collection in a camera case.

That is very kind of them! I guess your hobby must be regarded a bit eccentric by your family and friends? You are in Italy, world center of fashion, and you wear vintage Russian timepieces. And you are a girl. |>

I'm an old woman, not a girl... but my work comrades (we work in an ICT company) are so fine to tolerate my hobbies, loves, eccentricities! :-d

I've a question for all these people who have a lot of watches...how many do you use in real life?I mean, I just have nine watches, but I liked'em all and it's difficult for me to give them the wrist time they all deserve.

I don't have as many as some people but enough to keep a pretty big rotation. I pretty much wear/carry them all with the exception of my elgin pocket watch. Some I use less especially the vintage stuff or anything with a polished case (scratch magnet). If it's raining I use my TSAR or eventually my incoming amphibian. If I'm doing something that's fairly likely to bang a watch I use my molnija pocket watch (it's safe in a pocket). In essence I have one or two watches for every situation I could think of plus a few for just regular rotation. I wear everything at least once a month.

Stone,

Like the wall mount! Thought about something like that, too. Hate the idea of my watches in a box where I can't see them all the time.

Dear Stone Hill,
Looking at a first glance I first think that I would not like boxing against you because you must have a realy thick wristle!:-d

Seriously now, I used to do something similar using my bookselves on my library. I was placing tailor's pins on the edges of the selves then hanging my watches like bats! There were two problems though: FIRST, there is no solution when coming on hanging metal bracelets. SECOND, whenever I had to take off the selves one book, I was risking to make drop a watch. This had effetively killed 2-3 of them before I decide to put them back in boxes....

Though I have thick wrists I have no reach :-( (and no wind anymore LOL)

I repair computers all day and dont like to wear bracelets, as I am worried about scratching a computer case. So anything I wear on a normal day gets a nato as the buckle on the nato is on the side. I should have zoomed back a little as I use a self as my night stand. The self is about 2 inches below the ends of the bands. So if anything gets dropped it lands on the self or my bed.

But what you say has some real food for thought.

Are those cases made just for watches or something else? I have watches that are not in my wear rotation that are in a felt lined wooden box and those would be very nice to put those watches into.

Also what is the watch in the center of the 2nd photo. That is really something.

The cases are made of transparent plastic material and they were used for storage in the optical industrie. I got them from a friend for free. It fits perfectly for wostoks.
The Watch in the centre of imge two is a so called "watch and clockmaker" in Amfibia case with automatic movement 2416b. W&CM was a wostok brand for export in the soviet era. I have a second one in Komandirskie / Generalskie outfit, but with clickin bezel. You find it right below on image two. I think thats the more interesting watch.

Cheers

I'm still searchin' for one of them (in Generalskie case). Unfortunately prices for Vostoks with rare dials are getting really crazy, sometime around 70- 80 Euro - that really makes me sick. Thanks to God i'm plenty of Vostoks bought in the past, where prices were still normal. So i'm focusing on other stuff.

Wonderful :-! one day i will get rid of small and big boxes and i will store them in that way. Are the glass cases hand-made by you?

Just a suggestion - add a shutter (made in fabric or other material) to protect the dials from the action of the daylight.

Yes. It was done by me. Here's the project:

Do you think the sunlight can harm the dials? They are not exposed to it.
