Picked one up last week and so far all is ok, although it lacks so many basic cell phone features the overall experience has been positive.
I think it would has been more appropriate to call it the iPodphone as it is clearly an ipod first with basic phone and camera features.
Any one out there using one of these 3g iphones and what has your experience been so far?

I've had the 2G for a year now, and given all the wifi plus the 2.0 software, which us lowly 2G users also get, makes the phone superb. That recent software update was the best. I've never had issues, but voice quality is supposed to be better on yours. I had a Treo 650 before that and the iPhone just blew it out of the water. Nice to putter on these forums on it with a full web page.

Are you sure it is lacking features or do you just not know how to use them? ;-)

I am fully savvy with the iPhone and trust me - it lacks many cell phone features.
NO...
MMS
Video calling
unable to shoot video
Crippled bluetooth
No flash plugin
The camera has no control at all (exposure etc) and is only 2mp.
Apart from the GPS it has nothing my old phone didnt have, infact my old phone has numerous more features. (Sony Ericsson W880i)

I would argue that these are not as you call "basic cell phone features".

Was considering getting one, but it turns out the $200 price has an asterisk there for a reason.... Only new to AT&T and current iphone customers are eligible for this price. Those already with AT&T and not eligible for an upgrade pay the full price of $400-$500 depending on model. So after almost 2 years and many overseas trips and big bills seems they still want $400 plus tax and activation from me. I'd say it's worth the $400 but still going to wait a while for the lower price.

but the iPhone does not have a 'basic cell phone price ' either!! for that money apple should throw those features in for free....
I have a NOKIA E51 now and it does its job, but I liked my previous SonyEricsson better when I had it.too bad they don't have wi-fi models as much as NOKIA. Actually wi-fi is the only reason I bought the E51

Sounds like the iphone is still a gimmick - I have to say camera phones are usually "cack" but they seem to be improving and starting to realise the lense is critical. But what i want from a phone is consistent uninterrupted signal and reasonable battery life , easy texting, good mic and speaker, blue tooth. The internet interface is really poor - its slow and its hard to navigate, enter passwords - I hate it, got an EEE pc instead!!

I think its a novelty to have one. I have a Blackberry from Verizon and it does everything the iphone does and more. I have a 4GB card in it and can listen to music, watch videos all day if I want. Plus its much smaller and the battery last a long time. I don't need to use 2 hands to operate it and the trackball works awesome.

Let me know if it still shuts down Safari for no reason while your reading and viewing a web page. Thats the one bug that drove me insane!
I bought one last October but returned it after 10 days. It had a lot of cool things about it but as my only phone, I couldn't deal with ito| The 'phenomenon' is pretty amazing though, I think 3G's are selling on eBay for more than $1000:-s

Never had a problem with Safari crashing on mine. I use it everyday for web, mail, texting and voice. Great for real-time traffic and maps. California went to a hands-free phone law for drivers, and my old Treo bluetooth earpiece works great. The web experience is pretty much unparalleled. The new apps are great. Installed the eBay one immediately.

It's why I have the Ipod Touch. Same software (except GPS and of course call related stuff). In a Wifi packed area, like the city I'm in, it's great (even location and Maps work with Wifi). I wouldn't pay the extra € 450 (difference in price of device + extra cost of contract) just to be able to call with the same device and use GPS.
Most apps are great on the Touch although the Mail App is a bit too basic IMHO. Mobile Safari is superb and makes surfing great on a small device.

I had my iPhone 3G for few weeks, and even though battery life could be longer, (max 2days with one charge) I absolutely love it.
I turned WiFi and 3G off, since battery life is more important to me than how fast internet pages open and I am getting about 2-3days with one charge.
In my point of view, I cant understand all gripes going on about the phone. I was just out and taking photos with it, I can make pretty decent photos with it.
I also love listening audio broadcasts (either stored ones or live feed) from internet, all kinds of discussion programs and music channels, the choices are pretty much unlimited with access to internet.

Hmmm, I guess I'm not too lucky with these things:-s The Safari on my iPhone always shut down on it's own and my 32GB iPod Touch's Safari does the same thing. It just shuts down/crashes while I'm browsing once in a while:-s:-s:-s
I know I'm not the only one since it's been discussed on the Apple forums, ah well, it's still a pretty cool device. Although I didn't expect my new Touch to have the same issue, I still enjoy it enough that I bought it as a replacement for my iPod Photo;-)
I guess I learned something today........I'm not too lucky with the Apple 'Touch' stuff and I seem to gripe, but I didn't realize I 'enjoy' it:think:....:-s Hmmm...

I have been offered an iPhone G3 for free and stopped by an AT&T store this morning to check it out. I asked if they would advise me changing from my AT&T Tilt.
The answer was "No, it doesn't get any better than what you have."
I also noticed that the fees for service comparable to what I have with the Tilt would be about $30 more each month.
So I'll pass on the new "whiz-bang" iPhone and keep my cal. 321:

The only difference between voice & unlimited data on a family plan for 2 people with my Treo vs. the iPhone was the $30 data for another iPhone.
Use the browser more than anything on my iPhone, and Treo only had a very poor version of Opera. My text messages fall into default limit and I have untold thousands of rolleover minutes because I don't talk.
Nothing better than browsing and posting to this forum while at the carwash. :-)

Flash, video calling? Shooting video? How often do you use those features on your PHONE? And can your really fault the iPhone for it's camera quality? Camera quality on phones has always been poor. If you want a high quality camera, buy a Canon.

I use video calling quite often, the ability to shoot video is also something I found useful - the lack of flash plugin support is something I miss as I use the browser very frequently.
I did not mention the camera quality - I mentioned the lack of control - eg. exposure, macro, night time etc - these are basic to most cheap camera cell phones and something I would expect to see on a hand set of this price bracket.

Then you also have a bigger, heavier phone. Flash was left out because it would have slowed page loading considerably. Apparently, Adobe is working on a version that will work better.
Besides, that, no one has a browser as robust as this, or with such a large screen.
