Hi,
As promised, hers the report on the repair of a nice cylinder escapement Ladies pocket watch. May daughter has started a collection of ladies pocket watches. I purchased this watch for her.
The watch was very dirty, was lacking its glass and did not work, I rapidly discovered way. The top jewel of the fourth wheel was broken and did not hold the pivot in place, the top jewel of third wheel was also cracked fortunately the pivots were ok.
The only difficulty I came across was to remove the cannon pinion, normally you push it out, I tried every thing, after a frustrating morning I went to may watchmaker and he showed me haw to do it, you don’t push the pinion but gently tap out the pin that goes throw the canter wheel arbour and comes out on the other side of the main plate.
He also replaced the two brocken jewels (they were rubbed-in jewels) for this you need special tools that are costly, he did a very fine job, with a loop you can’t tell they were replaced. He also sold me a new glass, the glass fitted snugly but was not very tight, I asked him about securing the glass better with a drop of glue. I was astonished when he suggested the traditional old way, and use garlic to glue the glass, he told me to just passe a tooth of garlic on the rim of the glass with the glass in place, I did it, I did not pull very hard but it seems to work.
I had (still have) doubts on haw to oil the cylinder escapement, I oiled the watch like a traditional wrist watch and applied some spots of oil on the escape wheel teeth.
I’m a very armature watchmaker. And only recently started work on more serious projects. I’ve been a watch addict for many years, and have studied watch making for a long time. It has been very rewording and has greatly increased May knowledge of watches.
