View Full Version : PO or Railmaster?

I know, the correct answer is both! And that may be where I end up. But I have to pick one first. I was initially set on the PO, which I think is a nearly perfect watch. The only problem is that I will be wearing it most of the time in a semi-formal to formal business setting. I think it looks fine with a suit, but isn't exactly dressy. Since I'm not especially fond of dress watches, the Railmaster is about as far as I'm going to go. I think this is also a beautiful watch... Just something about it that doesn't grab me the way the PO does...

Any thoughts or suggestions? Every day I wake up thinking I've made up my mind, until I log on to WUS and see pictures that make me want the other one...

I have the PO and love it. I tried the Railmaster a few times at an AD and never could pull the trigger. I think it was just because there were others higher on my list. The Railmaster is a sweet watch. IMO only, I think it is easier to dress down the Railmaster than it is to dress up the PO. Even with a really nice black croco strap, the PO still screams dive watch (on a really nice croco strap). I've seen pics of the Railmaster on a bracelet (sporty), nice strap (dressy). I've also seen pics on some really weathered leather ammo straps that gave it the coolest vintage/military kind of look. Additionally, I saw one on an OD NATO that was too cool. In short, if you are looking for versatility, I think the Railmaster will offer more "different looks" than the PO. The PO on the other hand is simply one bad dive watch. - David

Thanks David - that pretty much sums up my thinking on it, as well. The Railmaster is a sweet watch and better suited to what I'll be wearing it for... but somehow just doesn't excite me quite the way the PO does. I suspect the real problem here isn't the watch, but the suit...

Anyway, thanks for the input!

Well, the RM does have decent WR so swimming, etc won't be a problem. It's big (the 42mm is ALL DIAL) so it won't look like a wimpy little dress watch, and it is somewhat rare (it's not gonna get you poser staus like the PO will). Wait a minute ... I'm starting to talk myself into an RM again. o| Anyhow, good luck. - David

PS, I'm with you on the suit. They are evil. - David

My advice (for what it is worth) would be to get the watch that you are the most interested in or excites you the most. No offense to the other posts or the virtues of the RM but you clearly indicate that the PO is the one that you like the most, excites you the most, etc...
If it was me and I could not get both at the same time, then I would get the one that I really liked the most - 1st. Otherwise, I would be afraid that I would just be unhappy with the other one. Besides, I would think that the black bezel PO on the ss band would go fine with a suit (as long as the thickness of it could fit under your shirt sleeve cuff). I have the orange bezel PO and I don't think that I would try to do that with a suit & tie but the black bezel - sure. I think it would go just fine.
My 2 cents,
Bart

Check out the PO in the QOS trailers. Looks cool under a suit and great semi formal.

PO for me every time

I have a 39mm Railmaster but not a PO.

Both watches are versatile.
Both are truly waterproof.
Both can be dressed up or dressed down.

Not sure the Railmaster would suit a rubber strap but it look greats on Gator/Leather and good on Carbon/Kevlar.

The PO looks great on pretty much anything and the black bezel/white numbers version with a croc strap can look smart and formal.

I think maybe the PO looks better on a bracelet than the Railmaster does - I wear my Raily on the bracelet every now and then but I think it needs the contrast of a dark strap to really set off the beautiful clean face - then it looks stunning and really sings to me.

I've only tried on the PO briefly so can't really comment personally but from what others say it may be a little tight under a buttoned shirt cuff but should be no issue with cufflinks/dress shirt.

The PO is a great dive watch but I already had an SMP and wanted something different so the Railmaster it was. Sounds like you are looking for a reason to get the PO so I'd probably go with that. Otherwise what about an SMP - it truly suits all locations and fits well under a suit.

Unlikely you will find an answer around here, just people suggesting more options.:-d

Look at it this way - you might fancy something dressier with a suit but until you can afford that second Omega the black and white PO will look darned fine with the formal stuff and the rest of the time you'll be happy as Larry.:-!

Thanks, everyone, for your thoughts. Reading the comments, it occurs to me that I was a little leading about the PO. I think I'm actually equally taken with both - I just find myself talking up the one I'm currently thinking I won't get. Strange psychology, I know... Anyway, the comments were all helpful. I'll let you know what I decide - should be soon. (If I can't make up my own mind in a couple of weeks, my wife will do it for me. Lord knows she has plenty of practice:))

Too easy. Alcatraz. I think.

I think so too. Was my weak attempt at humor.

To the OP...I have been looking at PO's and RM's. I honestly think the Railmaster is one heck of a unique looking piece that is less sporty then the PO, but at the same time can be a sporty watch. IMO it is much more unique looking. That's my non-owning unbiased opinion.

(...)The only problem is that I will be wearing it most of the time in a semi-formal to formal business setting. I think it looks fine with a suit, but isn't exactly dressy.

-Go with whatever watch appeals to you the most, IMHO (In other words, join the PO club. :))

While I wholeheartedly agree that the RailMaster has got more dress potential than a PO, based on personal experience (Sigh, I do occasionally have to don a suit...) no-one not into watches will even notice what you are wearing, anyway - dressy or not.

At least as long as you are not wearing a $5-looking plastic digital making cheesy beep-beep noises every now and then.

As long as your cuffs are loose enough for you to pull back over the PO so you can see what time it is, I'd say go PO.

Now, the RailMaster _is_ a beautiful watch, though - definitely something I'd have to consider in a year or two...
