I think I've found the "one luxury watch" I'll have in my collection. The one where I'll have to start saving now and pick up in maybe a decade.

The Sapphire Omega Speedmaster w/ display back. http://www.omegarolex.com/omega_details/speedmaster_252.html

What do you guys think? Good or bad idea?

Excellent Choice - but be warned, you will not end up buying just one Omega

Very, very true!:-d
The Speedmaster is incredible. I think you will be very satisfied if it does end up being your only luxury watch.

If I could only own one watch, it would be Speedy, no question about it. In fact, I wear mine 98% of the time.

I prefer the classic steel back/hesalite front model, but there's nothing wrong with the "sapphire sandwich."

Problem

Isnt the Speedmaster pretty much old technology?
They have co-axial watches now.

Have they implemented new technologies into the speedmasters? If not alternatives?
One reason i like the Sapphire sandwich so much is the display back. Any other alternatives with visible movements?

My preferred alternative to the "sapphire sandwich" is a nice pre-owned ref 3572.50 hesalite/sapphire.

I've owned a couple of dozen Speedy Pros but have never bought a new one. You may want to check out this thread:

I think the Speedy is the one Omega to have if you're only going to have one. I had a Seamaster and sold it. While I miss it sometimes, the Speedy is the one that has my attention. I'm just pinching my pennies and biding my time.

I took Fr. John's valuable advice - and sought out a used 3572.50 - hesalite face / sapphire back. It was in pristine condition - and MUCH discounted versus new sapphire sandwich (3573.50). Either way - it's like getting two watches (if you count the front and back!).

Good Luck!

Exactly! Ed White wore a Speedy during a space walk in the 1960's and I wore on to the Mall today.... pretty much the same watch. The beauty of the Speedy is that it HASN'T changed.

Omega has introduced new movements, new crystal materials and other styles of watches, but the Speedy remains a constant and can be worn for almost anything, 'cept for a deep sea diver.

Omega has other display backs. I have a Cal. 2500 Railmaster for example. Nothing however beats the beauty of the cal. 861-derivative movements in the display back Speedy. Can you tell I'm a fan? ;-)

YMMV,

Hi! Is it true that the hesalite is not as sturdy and scratch resistant as the sapphire front? I'm still undecided between the steel back and the sapphire back. HELP!!! Any opinions / advise is welcome

The Hesalite crystal can pick up small scratches, but you don't really notice them. I have lots of little scatches on my daily wearer Speedmaster, but I only notice them if I look closely and at an angle to face of the watch. If you do notice scratches, you can easily buff them out. Don't freak out about it.

Remember that the "steel back" Speedmaster is a classic, no matter what the movement is inside. The display back is also a beautiful and functional watch.

Both versions are going to cost some serious coin. Which one speaks to you? That's the one to buy my friend.

I second that notion. You're in for at least two, probably 10.
