I hope I'm not speaking out of turn here (I'm not a professional photographer), but I think the three most important things to consider is:
a. tripod, obviously
b. SLR (I'm a Nikon guy, but I guess Canon will do, hehe)
c. fast lens (low f-stop)
A tripod will take away most of the blur, but to catch the lume as well as a static second hand, you'd need a fast lens to capture the shot. If you've ever tried astrophotgraphy, the same problem presents where you want to capture enough light without showing movement of the object. Again, the type of camera you use is critical in getting the right shot. The fun, and the allure of photography IMO, is fooling around with all the settings (Balance, ISO, shuter, aperture etc.) you have at your disposal and eventually getting a pleasing result.
Alternatively, you could set a small aperture and longer exposure to capture the sweep...
Hope it helps!:-!

As part of this discussion, would you mind sharing some info (camera, settings, etc.) The subtle light from the right is just perfect, love the 30 sec sweep!

Hi Andrč,
These were all taken with a 6 year-old 3megapixel Nikon Coolpix 885. I will upgrade at some point. A tripod is a must!

I shot the pic with my ancient D70. Shutter was 30 sec and F stop was around 13. Then I took out my LED flashlight and did a little LIGHT PAINTING! It's a lot of fun! :-!

Yep, can't do that with a Coolpix 885 - a different animal altogether, not even close.

Nothing wrong or ancient with a D70 if you get those results! Painting with light always gives interesting shots. At first I thought that the light was from the lume, but thanks for clearing it up. What lens did you use?

Had my trusty 50 1.8 on there. The lume was glowing on it's own, but the light underneath the watch was painted with my flashlight. I have a frosted green glass desktop that matches the color of the lume when it's lit so that's why it looks like it's the light from the lume.

Very nice. Thanks for the great lume pics.
How long do you have to keep it still for, to get a nice picture like that?

Hey Ben,
the camera was still for about 30 sec. You just have to make sure it's completely still or it will be blurry.
Intercept,
I'll see if I can borrow my friend's SMP to shoot it. I've always wanted a 2254!
