Face/Dial
What can I say I love it. It is a very "deep" dial with a lot of detail. I happen to like the color combination. The second hand is actually fluorescent green/yellow and is hard to capture in photos. The semi-skeleton dial speaks for itself. While I have no clue how to use the slide rule I think it adds a sporty look to the semi-dressy watch. The power reserve gauge is awesome and is a handy feature when rotating often.

Case/Crystal/Back
The case sides, back, crown, and stationary bezel are all highly polished SS. It adds a very dressy look and presents a little "bling" factor if that is what you fancy. I feel this allows the watch to be worn with just about anything.
High fit and finish. Very smooth screw down crowns. The sapphire crystal peaks out over the top of the stationary bezel. Sapphire crystal is on top AND bottom with an internal AR coat on the top crystal. While this AR coating works well, the sapphire is flat so reflections can be dominant outside in the sun. However, at certain angles both in and outside, the crystal seems to disappear.
The movement is decorated and very viewable even from the front. This watch charges like no other auto I have seen and takes about a half day of regular wearing to fully charge. The rotor moves so easily that once discharged, just picking it up starts it again.

Bracelet/Clasp
I really like the comfort of this watch. It is the largest watch I own, but wears very nicely. I have very small wrists (6.5") and after removing 3 links it sits perfectly balanced.
It is a mixture of brushed and polished solid links. Sporty, but at the same time somewhat dressy. I have to add that this bracelet is extremely quiet. There is almost zero rattle.
I have no issue with arm hair pulling. If you are familiar with the watchadoo, the Orient bracelet is not near as smooth/rounded on the edges, but I have no issues.
The clasp is nice...it's insides are highly polished. The Orient logo looks nice as well.

Overall Opinion
I am really liking my first Orient a lot. I never knew this company even existed 6 months ago and this certainly will not be my only Orient watch.
Accuracy so far set to atomic clock 48 hours ago: +7 sec. Very nice.
Lume (on the hands and at the 12 o'clock marker) lasts all night albeit nothing like a Seiko diver in it's intensity. And because the that lume is the only lume remaining lit, it is easy to read on it's black background.

Excellent review and photos! I may have to reconsider this one as I thought it would be too large for me, but you seem comfortable with its size.
jbdan
January 17th, 2009, 22:17
Thx! It is larger (diameter) then the OM/BM. But I am slowly getting accustomed to larger diameter watches. I have a tiny wrist (6.5") and that is pushing it. If it were any bigger I would think it looked funny on my small wrist. This is my max size watch (for now).
I've been thinking......for sub $400, where else could you get a beautifully polished SS case, solid link, dual-sided sapphire with AR coating, in-house movement, automatic watch? I don't think you can, but I could be wrong. Orient--> I like!

Nice write up. I echo John's comment about the size. It looks good on your wrist. I have 6.5" wrist as well and am concerned about getting too large a watch. I'm still noodling over the world time CEY04004B (http://www.discountwatchstore.com/store-products-Orient-CEY04004B-Orient-Mens-Sapphire-Automatic-Power-Reserve-World-Timer-CEY04004B_40439261.html) for many of the same qualities. It has a slightly smaller case size (43mm case diameter, 47mm including crown), so it may work out nicely.
The comments about the lume were also very interesting.
Thanks!

Great review.. I have to agree with all that you have said..Your model has the Marcus Gronholm rally colours for the second hand and highlights.. Here is mine on a leather strap with deployant buckle and red second hand and highlights..

Here's a pick of the orange one
Just found out soemone reviewed this after I started to write up on thise DOH! hahah! I'll tag this onto your review since it's the same watch.
1) Here's a close up of the face, I love seeing the heartbeat of the watch it's almost mesmerizing it's something completely different to my bunch of watches I have. Yeah I picked orange cause I like orange which is pretty much it, a few owners here picked black I see. Ignore any specs you see on the watch dial cause I forgot to dust is off first else the dial is completely flawless. The movement is non hacking but like the seikos you can easily manual hack this by gently easing it into the reverse when you are changing the time.
The real surprising thing is that the crystal on the face is actually sapphire front and back at this price point?! (around $380 cdn). I would've expected mineral glass like most of the seiko's and citizen's. The power meter here is such a useful thing to have on any automatic watch especially if you own more than one, during weekends I wear my more dressy looking watch so I give this a few shakes if it gets low. On full charge it falls to 1/2 after 24hrs so the stated 40hr power supply is pretty accurate there.
The 9 o'clock crown changes the time and the 4 o'clock crown changes the slide rule which is pretty much useless to most non flyers here. Since I live in Toronto, canada and run to the border often I left the slide rule on the MPH/KPH conversion which is pretty accurate and quick to see at a glance. An example on how to use it is if you are travelling 50Mph and wonder how fast is that KPH in Canada look at the inner ring 50MPH and the outer ring corresponds to 80KPH, neat tool eh? oh yeah and once you got to 70+MPH just add an extra 0 to the outer ring and it's still accurate.
http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/5452/orient1nj2.jpg
2) Here's a shot of the watch with the lume, it's lume is as bright as my aquaracer and by 6am in the dark I can easily glance at it so it's good enough for me. It's not as bright as the seiko 5 I had but it's good through the night. The 2,3,4,5 lume markers are missing but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to tell what time it is even when half awake.
http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/6310/orient2ek6.jpg
3) Shot of the see through back. It's really clean and a nicely decorated rotor, if you look carefully in the pic they even engraved the slanted egde of the rotor.
http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/4641/orient3cw6.jpg
4) Here's a close up shot of the crown, it's also decorated and well machined. Which doesn't scratch me at all, also both crowns are screw in so I've taken it swimming and jumping into whirlpools without a problem.
http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/3376/orient4oj7.jpg
5) Further away shot of the complete watch. The watch came with the metal bracelet that they show on their orient website but I mostly like rubber straps cause I like the freedom to quickly adjust it depending on how I feel. I only have one bracelet watch in my collection due to having at least one dress capable watch but could easily switch this to a bracelet if really needed but prefer not to. :-) with the 24mm lug width I able to get a beefy looking strap instead of some wimpy looking 18mm one.
http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/97/orient5xn8.jpg
All in all I really like it and think the quality is much higher than what it costs, funny thing is also my coworkers don't even notice when I wear my aquaracer cause it's a clean watch like more dressy ones but with this they wonder what the heck is that and ask me about it.
hope you guys enjoyed reading this I like to collect watches that are different from what I have since I buy to keep. So next thing I'm eyeing in the future (3rd quarter of 09, I like to enjoy the ones I have first) would probably be a 24hr watch or that citizen nighthawk cause I like the neat looking GMT function.

yeah i'm surprised that the orient watches are such high quality and detail. Throw in some seiko grade lume on there and it's like the ultimate watch! really good bang for the buck! even giving it's parent company seiko a run for it's money.

I have to say, the watch looks beautiful in that video. I'm not a huge fan of some of Orient's styling choices, but the CFT00004B is a gorgeous watch. I really like the distorted 6 and the big bold hands. I also am digging some of the Orient retro models.
I'm surprised at how fluid the second hand sweeps.

Are these models always "leftys," with the time set crown at 9 o'clock?
That's the one thing keeping me from jumping on one of these, because I think trying to set the time (which I'd do often because I rotate through a lot of watches and don't have a winder) would just be unnecessarily awkward.

It certainly is a little awkward, but in the grand scheme of life it is forgotten and matters none. Of course this is my opinion |> It is a cool watch...has 2 pieces of sapphire and has an awesome price if you search the web enough. This one of mine is now up for sale due to health issues and am torn :-( letting it go. Has not sold yet so maybe I end up with it anyways!

I am I am. It is really a cool watch. I have it on a brown Hirsch Liberty strap with white stitching and it is very comfy. It is a large diameter watch (~45mm) but without a bezel does not wear that big.

The only one that comes with the red seconds hand is the CFT00003D with a dark blue dial, white inner slide rule dial and leather band. Unfortunately is not available in metal bracelet as I myself would have picked this one too;-)

You can request Orient USA to fit the SS bracelet on it if you wish, but they are going to charge you a pretty penny for the metal bracelet, effectively negating the cost savings of the sale. But it can be done.

That model is still in production but seems not to be stocked by Orient USA. I would get in touch with Joey at Orient joey@orientwatchusa.com and see if they carry it. I agree is a very nice version but unfortunately Orient's international site http://orient-watch.com/product/sporty_automatic/cft00001b.html shows it as being offered only with a leather band, not bracelet.
Notice also how they show an orange dial version of the watch with a leather band. That version is not available in the USA either.
The metal bracelet in these watches is expensive, but like I said, Joey can fit it for you at extra cost prior to shipping (provided that he can source the specific CFT model you are going after).

I asked myself this same question but this watch is well worth every penny when purchased at 50% off. I think that at full $600 MSRP, this Orient can be a tough sell of sorts, but discounted at half off it becomes a no brainer.
This is an exquisite piece. Sapphire front and back, the dial, the hands, the slide rule, the signed crowns, the ultra high quality bracelet/clasp and the sweet in-house 46R40 movement all make this watch a winner in my book.
I challenge anyone to show me a watch exactly like the CFT series from another brand with the same design/features and quality for $300. I am afraid no one else makes a watch of this caliber so accessible to the common man.
My only quibble with it, and it is a small one, is the lack of a date window. But since this will not be my only watch to wear, it is of no importance to me.
I am seriously looking forward to the UPS man to show up with it. This will be my 4th Orient mechanical watch purchase in less than 3 months.|>

Thanks Sting it's a sweet watch. I'm a chronic flipper and this watch has remained with me. It is just too cool and with twin sapphire! I bought it grey market for around the 50% off price at OUSA. It now resides on a dark brown Hirsch Liberty strap and is one of my favorites by far.

Hi all, first time poster here...
I realize that this thread is a few weeks old, but I just wanted to thank jbdan for a great review with great pics. I appreciate your sharing what size wrist you have too - it is so helpful to see a watch on a wrist (and one that is close in size to mine - 7"). You sold me on this watch, along with the fact that Amazon just dropped the price to $299. I was eyeballing Amazon all day yesterday (price was $420) and trying to find a less expensive option (ebay, buy.com, etc). I happened to check again today and the price was suddenly 50% off!
I pulled the trigger, and this will be my first Orient watch, and my first Automatic. I also have a Seiko Kinetic 5M43-OB19 that my wife got me for our engagement, but I have been interested in this type of watch ever since I saw the HD Documentary "Masters of Time" on HDNet a few years ago. (Amazing program, btw!).
Thanks again,
Jeff

Twin sapphire with internal AR on top. Mechanical, polished case is gorgeous, skeleton is sweet!

Do you do the resizing yourself, or have it done at a jewelry store? I haven't had to do this in a while, but I had it done at a jewelry store at the time.
I see the tools on Amazon for about $12-17. I should have just ordered one with the watch, but they didn't show me the item until AFTER I placed the order!
How much to they usually charge to have the resizing done at a jeweler?

I have it resized at a Citizen-Seiko AD I frequently do business with. Because of my VIP status there, the owner never charges me for resizing the bracelet of any watch, not just one purchased directly from him.
He typically charges $5-$7 for bracelet resizing.
Interestingly enough I do have the resizing tools but I am not brave enough yet to experiment with my brand new watches.:-d

Mini, I'd recommend buying one of the cheap sizing tools sold by Amazon and practicing on an old bracelet. Even those inexpensive tools work quite well if you're careful and have a steady hand. Don't pay attention to the bad online reviews, I think they're written by impatient people who get in a rush and flub the job.

I just got one of these babies with the white/silver dial from the sales forum. I sized the bracelet with a strap changing tool (hey MINI, get going on learning how to use your watch tools man!) and tried it on. It really is a nice looking watch. I really wish the bezel action on my PVD world timer is the same as the slide rule bezel on this one (nice resistance and the crown screws down). I think it fits my 6.5" wrist just fine.

I got mine yesterday and wanted to wear it so badly, but it showed up too late in the day to get to a jeweler to get the band resized. Today, I had two links removed, and the clasp pin is in the middle of the 3 holes. I like the fit at this point on my 7" wrist. A bit loose, but not too loose. I love the looks of it, and I could stare at the smooth motion of the second hand and the motion of the balance wheel, escape wheel, and the pallet fork for hours!
I will take some photos when we get some good light here (weather had been miserable).
Just a quick (noob) question about the Orient movements.
When the watch is fully wound (indicator reads "Full"), does the rotor seem to turn less smoothly? I noticed when it first arrived (with little power reserve) that the rotor seemed to turn very easily and smoothly, but now when it is full, it isn't as smooth. Is this normal? Is there a means in the winding mechanism that prevents overwinding? I assume that there must be...
EDIT: Accuracy so far (about 30 hours after setting) is about 2-3 seconds fast. Most of that time was spent lying on its back, but I have been wearing it for about 8 hours today. I am very happy with that!
Thanks again to the forum!

Yes it is perfectly normal for the rotor to have a little tension in it when fully charged. Your accuracy is excellent :-!
Congrats on it look forward to your pics!

Im sold on this watch, Its going to give it to myself for my birthday.:-!
What Id like to know is about your experiences buying online. im deffinitly getting it online, because $600 is a little too much but $300 is a bargain. Ive seen a few sites but Im not sure if they can be trusted. Any recomendations?

I bought mine from Amazon. I noticed that they have it from multiple sellers, included direct from Amazon.com.
I would always recommend purchasing through Amazon - but only direct through them - not third party.
http://www.amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/?_encoding=UTF8&tag=spiffspace-20)
Go this link, do a search for "orient CFT00004B". It will probably find one for $288. Click on the link that says "3 New" from...just below where it says "Sold by watchgems". You should find one there for $299 that you can add to your cart, and this is one that is sold by Amazon direct.
Personally, I think it is worth the extra $11 to deal with Amazon directly. They have a very good return policy - just don't resize (or ideally don't wear) the watch if you might return it.
NOTE: Full disclosure - the link I provided is an Amazon associates link. I get a small percentage referral fee if you buy something by searching with that link. I don't want anyone accusing me of being a shill for Amazon! Seriously - I don't know where you can find better pricing or customer service. I posted the first comment that this watch was on sale at Amazon about a month ago (when I decided to pull the trigger). They had dropped the price by $120 overnight, and I couldn't pass up that deal.
I love mine! I posted a review under the name J. Roetman on the amazon site - nothing exciting, but just full disclosure once again.
EDIT: The watch in the images above your post is NOT the CFT00004B. It is the leather band version with red markings. The watch I bought is the CFT00004B - which has the stainless band, and the green second hand and markings (as shown in the first post in the thread). Just wanted to clarify.
And I bought mine for myself for my birthday too (sort of)! :-)
Thanks,
Jeff

Heya Tictoc :-)
Amazon is a good place. I got mine at WatchSurplus on ebay. It is $309 there and they are a reputable seller. I've bought several watches they are prompt with delivery and have good communication.
Happy b-day and please post pics if/when you get it! |>

I got my CFT0004B directly from Orient Watch USA when they had a round of 50% off online coupons. Paid $300 delivered to my door. I absolutely love mine. Check out the video review I made on it posted right here in the Orient review forum.

Thanx guys, Ill check out both and most likely go with the one with the best price that particular day. Although I like the Idea of dealing directly with amazon.
The one im looking at, is the one with the Stainless Steel band and flourescent green/yellow second hand.
Ill post the pics as soon as I get it.
Once again thanx guys

Im about to pull the trigger on this watch but have a few more question to ask those of you who have one. Does this watch feel flimsy and light or cheap? It looks beautiful from the pics and from the reviews so far it seems nice quality but Id like to know a little more before finally getting it. For example how come you can find a $600 watch on amazon for half the price? Is there something they arent telling us has it not sold that well? if not why since this seems to be a very high quality and atractive time piece?

ITs here,:-! Guys thanks alot for the suggestion Im really pleased with my watch. Its everything I was hoping it to be. Its a little bigger than I thought but everything else about it seems perfect, As mini driver mentioned It has a nice weight and hefty feel to it. and at the price I got it for makes it an even sweeter deal. Now that Ive had it in my hands for a while Id recomend this to anyone who appreciates a nice automatic watch (errr ummm I guess that makes just about everyone on this forum :p

Hey mini I have a question about it. Does the second hand ever stop if I pull out the crown? I have another automatic and It stops when the crown Is pulled Ifind this usefull to set the time as accurately as possible. I cant seem to do that with the Orient however and the Instruction booklet that came with the watch is not specific nor does it mention anything about this?

No. The 46R40 movement used in this Orient does not hack, nor does hand wind. This also applies to the vast majority of Orient Automatic labeled watches.
The only exception right now is the Orient Dual Time model CDH00002B with the caliber 48K40 movement that does indeed hack the seconds hand when pulling out the crown to adjust the time. It still does not hand wind, however. See the Orient review forum and look up my video review on the CDH series.
Hope this helps.

You can actually stop the second hand if set the time backward at exactly the right rate. It is tricky, but can be done. I do this when I am setting my watch to the exact time...
(Not sure if this is bad for the mechanism though!)

I do not recommend engaging in this practice. It simply can not be good for the movement long term as it was clearly not designed to hack. While these watches are very accurate, you simply have to accept the fact that you won't be able to adjust the seconds to match official atomic time. If that is important to you, I suggest going the radio controlled quartz route instead.
This is a quirk that comes along with owning a magnificent mechanical timepiece like the Orient.

there is an easy work around... once you've set the time, you can simply adjust the minute hand when the second hand hits twelve

Well Ive had my watch for just under a week now there is not much to add to the two wonderfull reviews on this thread, but I could at least tell you my impression of this magnificent watch.
PROS: Price: $300 for a nice automatic watch. 10/10
Qality: Im not too familiar with the orient brand but this particular
model is very well put together feels solid and has heavy
feel to it. 9/10
Design:Combines clasic and modern elements, this watch seems like
it belongs either on the wrist of a pilot or a race car driver.
And it sports a semi skeleton dial, and exhibition back to
keep us Watch enthusiasts entertained. 8/10
Accuracy:I set the time last week and so far its between 2-3
seconds off (but I dont know if im counting correctly) 7/10
Extra Gadgets: It has a slide rule and a power reserve indicator
which are pretty cool to look at.
Cons: No Day/Date function.
Cant adjust the second hand (Hacking)
In conclusion after recieving my watch and wearing it for a while I felt I got plenty of bang for my buck. Im really satisfied with my purchase and will gladly recomend this one to anybody here.
