Hello All,

I'm trying to identify the age of this Timex pocket watch for a friend. It's a wind up movement. I was wondering if it is real Gold because of the weight, but I do not see any markings indicating content. Also the the dial has Taiwan printed on it I guess it can't be too old. It has ornate engraving on the case but I can't get those pics to upload. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

If it were gold, it would be well marked. So it is probably gold plated.

Dating of the watch would be aided by movement pics! (See the stickies at the top of the forum for tips.)

Thanks for the reply. Since it's a friend's watch I'll stand on item #5 in Ray's second group of posts from said sticky. Regarding the opening of case backs.

Also, I have attached pictures of the case for reference, just in case anyone recognizes the type.

I got one at home exactly like it... got it from my parents when I was young.

It's probably from around the late 70's, early 80's.

Thanks,

JeffLook for some microscopic numbers on the dial near the word 'Taiwan'. the leading 2 digits should be the year of manufacture.

I seriously doubt that Taiwanese Timexes ever had any gold content in them.

Good idea not to open a friend's watch if you don't have prior experience, but if anybody else has this model and is willing to open the case, then we'd all be fascinated to take a look ;-)

the case back should pop off, with using a small knife... opening place should be close to the stem.

D'oh! You're right of course.

e.g. my Timex wristwatch has its dial signed:
TAIWAN 22718 02579
thus 1979
