Since there isn't an IWC forum, I was thinking it wouldn't hurt to have an Official IWC Thread. The thread is mainly, pretty much for those who love, like, hate or just want more information on IWC. [IWC Forum added on April 13th, 2009 !, wus admin]
So if:
You have an IWC watch, post it here.
You have an IWC question, post it here.
You have an IWC news, post it here.
Pretty much anything IWC related could be posted it here for everyone to see and enjoy.
So let us give this thread a try, shall we?

IWC WATCH INDEX (http://users.tpg.com.au/wookie99/iwcwatches.html)
Some history:
An interesting fact you may or may not know: International Watch Company (IWC) is possibly the only major Swiss watch company whose founder was an American!
During the 1860's, three manufacturers dominated the American watch industry: Elgin, Howard and Waltham. Combined, these firms produced upwards of 100,000 pocket watches. Times were changing in the industry as pocket watches went from being a status symbol that only the wealthiest individuals could afford, to an everyday item available to the middle class. As a result, production methods had to be improved; for example, most parts for watches were still being made by hand. Costs were also high because the pool of available, qualified watchmakers was relatively small.
In Boston, Massachusetts, Florentine Ariosto Jones, who had worked in the American watch industry for a number of years, keenly observed the failure of Aaron Lufkin Dennison, a leader in the watch business, whose efforts to move production to Switzerland to benefit from lower wages and Swiss watchmaking know-how, failed miserably. Undaunted, Jones took over the failed enterprise and soon set up his own company in Switzerland. His plan was to assemble watches in Switzerland and import them into the United States, hence the name International Watch Company.
Fortuitously, Jones made the acquaintance of one Johann Heinrich Moser, a watchmaker whose hometown of Schaffhausen was conveniently located near the Rhine. Following Moser's advice, a dam was built in order to harness the mighty river and generate hydro-power to drive the machines used in manufacturing facilities throughout Schaffhausen.
A watch factory was built in Schaffhausen to take advantage of the cheap hydro-power and production commenced in 1868. Despite the company's unique business plan, the enterprise was doomed from the start. For one thing, Jones had trouble selling the watches in America, due to a high tariff on imported finished watches. An even worse problem: Jones was undercapitalized and encountered technical problems with the machines. By 1875, he was scrambling to find new investors, amid allegations by disgruntled stockholders that the company was on the verge of collapse. Inevitably, the company filed for bankruptcy and Jones was forced to relinquish control of his company.
A Swiss consortium acquired IWC's shares and put another American, Frederick Seeland, at its helm. Although the company's fortunes improved somewhat, the improvement was not deemed sufficient enough. As a result, the company was put up for sale again. This time, one of IWC's stockholders, Johannes Raschenbach-Vogel, bought the company at auction for 280,000 francs. Technical achievements and increased sales soon followed with the production of the first pocket watches with digital time indication, as well as development of the famous Calibre 52 movement, which at the time was quite revolutionary in its concept and construction.
Although the company experienced significant growth, following World War I, the company's fortunes again hit rock bottom under the proprietorship of Ernst Homberger-Rauschenbach. Fortunately, a major modernization effort paid off when the advent of World War II resulted in increased military demand. It was thus during World War II that IWC created the first oversize anti-magnetic pilot's watch, followed by the famous Mark X, featuring its new in-house movement, Calibre 83. In 1944, IWC had a close call when the Allies mistakenly bombed Schaffhausen. As luck would have it, the factory narrowly escaped destruction.
In the aftermath of the war, International Watch Company lived up to its name and became a company of international scope. Exports to the United States increased and the brand became best known for its specialty watches, such as the Mark XI and Ingenieur - the first automatic IWC with a soft-iron inner case that protected the movement against magnetic fields - as well as for its elegant dress watches. Needless to say, vintage IWC's from the 1940's and 50's are highly collectible today and in great demand, as they are somewhat under-priced compared to other high-end watch brands of that era.
Although IWC entered the quartz era with its first quartz watch in 1969, using the Beta 21 movement, the company was ultimately unable to remain under family ownership. In 1978, a majority interest in the company was sold to VDO Adolf Schindling AG.
Subsequent developments include the debut of the Porsche series of sports watches, which remain in production to this day, as well as the creation of the "DaVinci" - a perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch that is mechanically programmed for the next 500 years. This watch caused quite a stir when first introduced and set new standards with its "user friendly" perpetual calendar. In 1993, the company again stunned the watch world when it unveiled the remarkable Il Destriero, which at the time was the most complicated wristwatch in the world.
The year 2000 is no less exciting for the company, as it introduces a new advertising campaign, as well as the 5000 calibre, a new mechanical movement with a power reserve of seven days and an automatic movement. The automatic, an IWC exclusive, is a further development of the patented Pellaton system. The pocket watch-size movement is featured in the latest addition to the Portuguese line: an automatic with a power reserve display. It should also be noted that 1999 was the most successful year in IWC's history, with 39,000 watches sold, 115 million Swiss francs in revenue, and over 350 employees.
In closing, the company's philosophy is best summed up by IWC's current CEO, Michael Sarp, who recently stated: "We shall produce watches of the highest quality with unique technical and design characteristics and thus continue to experience the pleasures of innovation." If you should have an opportunity to examine an IWC, you will quickly realize that Mr. Sarp speaks the truth.

Love IWC, especially their unaffordable (for me) higher end models. I am not sure yet what I think of the new ATs. How about you?

I prefer the last generation AT's better and I like the generation before that better as well but the new one is growing on me. In the last generation, I particularly like the unique way of turning the inside bezel and they seem to have stepped away from that with the new one. My favorite is the Galapagos edition but I think it will be in limited production so that kind of makes it as one of those "must purchase right away" once they come out. At the moment, I am still skeptical with the new AT's until I can hold one myself.
I like the quick strap change system though:
https://www.iwc.com/messepopup_2009/_img/aquatimer_collection/img_band_schnellwechselsystem.jpg
Bracelet quick-change system*: Flexibility & safety
IWC diver's watches were developed for amateur and professional underwater use and have a modern, technologically advanced design. One of their outstanding features is a new bracelet quick-change system* that enables the wearer to exchange the wristband in seconds. Any diver can swap the bracelet for a rubber strap or a practical hook-and-loop strap in no time, completely hassle-free. A catch on the underside of the lugs is released, separating the band from the case. When tightened on the diver's wrist, the watch cannot be separated from the band, even unintentionally. The replacement wristband (whether hook-and-loop, rubber or a steel bracelet) is pushed into the lugs and clicks firmly into place. The process is simplicity itself and requires no tools. The rubber and above all the hook-and-loop straps are an attractive alternative to the stainless steel bracelet and can be adjusted to the required length quickly and simply.

I read in Watch Time that the ATs will come in three color combos: yellow/black, blue/white, orange/white. Haven't seen the latter two yet. I am curious about the blue/white scheme. Might become a "gotta have" some day.

What do people think of the IWC mark XVI?
I like the Mark XVI, it is just the right size for my wrist at 39mm. It is a classic design and I doubt it would go out of style. I must admit though, I prefer the Pilot Chrono (3717) over the Mark XVI (3255). I also like the Mark XVI Spitfire with the raised numerals though.
Also, I figure I might as well share my one and only IWC.

Adam, you maybe in luck as the last generation AT will no doubt go on sale at a deeper discount so the new AT's maybe a blessing in disguise. :-! Well unless you meant it's already on the way, then congrats.
I don't think the Inge will be replaced though, unlike the last gen AT's which will probably stop production (if they haven't already).

I wish I had one incoming... Alas, I'll have to wait a bit before the missus allows me to free up funds for yet another watch purchase. As such, for the time being I'll simply have to content myself with looking at pics of the current AT online, or in person at my local AD.
With respect to the Ingenieur, I'm afraid that the venerable 3227-01 has been discontinued in favor of the new Mission Earth. As I said before, I'm glad I've already got mine, 'cuz 46mm is unnecessarily (ridiculously) large for this watch. At 42.5mm it was/is perfect.

To give you an idea though, the stainless steel version retails for $7,300 and released in 2008. it's a handsome watch but imo, too big. if they made this around 40mm, i would have bought one a long time ago.

With my recent Spitfire purchase, I figure it is a good time for some quick history behind it.
http://www.thewatchquote.com/mesIMG/img800/21458.jpg
Pilot’s watches are a tradition at IWC Schaffhausen. IWC launched its first pilot’s watch in 1936 with the “special watch for pilots”. The Spitfire, one of the most impressive aircraft in the history of aviation, which stands out for its elegance and its supreme technical competence, also made its maiden flight in the same year, exactly 70 years ago. These two legends meet again at IWC – in the new Spitfire pilot’s watches collection.
Power Flyer Spitfire
Technically advanced watches are a strong point of IWC Schaffhausen – in the water with the Aquatimer, on land with the Ingenieur models and in the air with the extensive range of pilot’s watches. The latter comprises the Classic collection, with dials in the traditional instrument look, and a more elegant collection, whose appearance is just as striking as the aircraft from which the watches take their name: the Spitfire.
Tribute to a legend
The collection is a tribute to a British fighter aircraft that makes the hearts of ambitious pilots race. Developed in the mid-1930s, the Spitfire was an aerodynamic masterpiece, a high-tech machine of its age, and to this day is still one of the much-admired stars at air shows throughout the world. The name Spitfire is also a tradition at IWC Schaffhausen; a special edition of watches bearing this name, limited to 1,000 individually numbered pieces, was issued in the year 2000. The basis for this special model was the Mark XV, which might be described as the grandson of the legendary Mark 11 which saw service from 1948 onwards as an official pilot’s watch with the Royal Air Force. This was followed in 2003 by an entire Spitfire range, which has been available ever since in parallel with the Classic range of IWC pilot’s watches.
There are four models – an Chrono-Automatic, the UTC watch with its two time zones, the Mark XVI and the new Midsize – in the new IWC Spitfire range, which owes a great deal to the outstanding technology and restrained elegance of the single-engined aircraft. Just as the panels on aircraft are usually attached to the frame with rivets, the numerals and indices are riveted to the dial in the new Spitfire watches. The appliquéd details are grouped around the raised centre of the dial, which is embossed in the truest sense of the word. If you look at the watch, not directly from the front but rather at an oblique angle, you will get an impression of the three-dimensional aspect of the dial, the surface of which has been rhodium-plated to produce a silky shimmer from which it derives its restrained elegance. The impression of this is reinforced in the chronograph by the recessed totalizers. The new hands, which resemble propeller blades, are completely coated with luminous material and offer outstanding readability both day and night.

Thanks, NightScar. I consider the IWC Spitefires among the very nicest pilot watches out there -- with their simple, but interesting, dial treatments and great legibility. In fact, my Spitefire Chrono is the most legible watch I have.

Hi folks, I´m interested in buying a vintage Golf Club model( Ref 1829 ). I´ve heard there are some fakes around. So is there an archive where I can find out which case refs belong to that model ?

This is awesome!
A very own IWC forum, finally!

Thor - amazing UTC!
I might pick that up if I can find a good preowned one as one of my daily wearers!
Plus my job requires me to travel a lot so that would be helpful!

Great idea about the IWC subforum/thread, guys.
I was in Naples, FL last week and had an opprtunity to try on a Portugese Chrono and a rose gold Portugese Auto (7 day power reserve) at Torneau.
The rose gold Auto is :-p:-p...Classy, yet seriously blingy. The transparent back is just stunning.
The chrono is more elegant and is beatiful as well, but I wish it would be thicker (like the Auto at 15mm).
Also, I am somewaht surprised that IWC does not offer bracelets for the Portugese line...
In any case, I was given a nice 300page book about IWC watches, which was a very nice read and an excellent intro to the brand.
Will be saving up for a Portugese!

hello! been waiting for a WUS/IWC forum...
i've owned a few breitlings and panerais...but currently down to only 2 watches, picked up the 5001 portuguese over a week ago to go along with the rad. imo doesn't matter if the dial is black or white/silver, it's a stunning piece!

Hey Guys,
I don't have an IWC (wish I had one of those older Aquatimer 2000 models...) but I just wanted to offer my support for the new IWC Forum. I'll be checking it quite a bit!

Shah: thats the main reason I got mine - way too much travel. The UTC complication just works great; the fact that you can set the hour without stopping the watch just makes life so much easier. Add the fact that it works equally good with casual or business clothes, and you got your self one outstanding road warrior!
