Question:
What does it take to sell an old Hanhart for a record price on eBay?

Answer:
Three small and yellowish pictures and a very short description! :-)

The collectors/dealers (?) outbid each other during the last 60 seconds and the price went through the roof. The auction ended at US$ 5,060 / EUR 4,260 and I was quite surprised because in my opinion eBay prices for vintage Hanharts were quite moderate during the last months.

I enhanced the first picture so the dial is bit clearer

Apart from being in heavily used condition this chrono is special in several ways:
It seems to be in original condition, is an early single pusher, is German Navy issue ("KM" = Kriegsmarine), markings look correct and it has a "red scale" dial. All this translates to "very rare".

Here is a another Hanhart KM in very good condition

The Hanhart single and double pushers (with or without turnable bezel) are not only Luftwaffe pilot chronographs, they were also issued to the German navy. Some had special dials with red tachymeter, telemeter or decimal scales (or a combination) on them.

Here are some "red scale" pictures I found on my harddisk. The pics are from various auctions, from collectors and military watch forums (thanks folks!)

Hi -

I saw it as well and it was a fascinating game there at the end. But a tad out of my league, to put it mildly.

But the price was, I think, not entirely out of line: the demand is there. But given the condition, it was fairly high.
