Great looking piece! And don't worry about wearing it down, I just saw one of these (bit earlier model I think) that was used by a military officer as daily beater for 30 years of service and still used it during retairment, it was in top condition after he passed away (althou it had been serviced few times, but cosmeticly it was amazing, beaten, scratches, WABId up real good but looked way better then any "new" watch, it had life in it). Don't worry, these are tough chronos.

it is a lovely watch. i have heard, though, that the casebacks are fairly thin and prone to dinging. is that true?

Yes, it's true. More information here:

There are actually two cases on these. The outer case is paper thin solid gold. Even the lugs are hollow. I'd be surprised if there was 10 grams of 18K gold total. The inner case consists of two brass rings to support the movement held together by a dust cover.

The Landeron/Venus movements on these are pretty good, considering these were "tourist" watches. They were intended to last only until you reached the Swiss border. ;-)
