that a UTC-module ( like the one on the B1) has a 24-hour dial ....
Special reason for that ?
I have never seen a 24-hour watch irl, so I presume the hands turn half-so-fast as a "normal" watch ?

Hi Marc-B1,

You are right indeed, that way you immediately see if it is night or day in the other timezone you have set. If it was a 12-hour dial, there would be no way to 'read' this from the UTC module.

By the way, I have seen pictures of older UTC modules that had a 12-hour dial, but in that case I wouldn't have wanted one.

The UTC module is a bit harder to read, as the hour-hand indeed moves at half the speed. Just like on the Cosmonaute. But since it is much smaller, you have to take a good look until you are really used to it.

Anyway, I love my B-1 with the UTC module and I am very happy that you gave me a good excuse to post another one of my pictures :-D

In case I am giving you a headache with all my old pictures, this one seems appropriate :-!

Kind regards,

Cinq

Yes, they used to offer the module in 12 hour format.

The 24 hour format is ideal for aviators, as all time in aviation (on all continents AFAIK) is base on UTC (called Zulu in U.S. Aviation), which is also the same (renamed actually) as GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). This is the world time standard, so if for example I were filing a flight paln, I would give the times in Zulu (which is only in 24 hour format).

I could easily do the math (timezone calculations are in fact part of the FAA Private Pilot written knowledge test), but any aid to avoid a potential error is a help, and with the module, I could simply look at my wrist and viola! I know when I leave in an hour it will be xxxx hours Zulu.

BTW, that is why Rolex designed the GMT Master, it was for aviators (if I recall correctly, they designed it at the request of Pan Am Airlines).
