Ernie -

Thanks! I hope to be able to help everyone out here as much as I can. :-)

Vintage watches are the centerpiece of my collecting, largely for two reasons.

First: I'm a notorious cheapskate. I want to get the best bang for the buck, and this is what vintages are. Doesn't necessarily mean that I buy cheap watches - my watchmaker always bitches at me about this, but he gets to repair them - but rather that I aim at getting vintage watches that are horologically significant. Not all of mine are - still learning - but I try.

Second: the watch world today is so very, very different from the heydays of the watch industry in so many ways. I'm an economist, a forecasting industrial econometrician by trade, and I've been a successful industrial forecaster for the last 15 years, working in Switzerland and Germany after four years in the US. My interest in vintage watches reflects my interest in the industrial development of the watch industry as a whole, its players and goals, its problems and fates.

Finally, I'm located in Germany, married to an Austrian, US expat, have two blogs, no mortgages, no debt and two teenage daughters. Drive a 525TD, but looking at a Chrysler 300CD, have a Pentax 6x7 with 45mm, 105mm and 300 mm lenses, but am moving to digital with at first my Nikon Coolpix 5000, aiming at a 20MP+ camera in the not too far future (either Pentax or a view camera with scanner back if the bonus is big enough).

If there are any questions, feel free to ask: there are never stupid questions, only stupid answers. I hope to avoid those, and am looking forward to a grand time...

Best to all and thanks again, Ray and Ernie, for letting me loose on the unsuspecting!

:-)

Hi John, hope you'll enjoy moderating this forum together with Ray :-!
This is great news for all of us the Vintage Forum as we now have a European resident to improve our response times and give much needed expertise in European watch brands. :-p
John is also an economist with inside knowledge of the watch manufacturing business. I'm really happy to have him as part of our WUS team.
Wecome and thanks again John. :-!

Welcome to the moderator post of this august forum (and now even more august forum, now that you are a moderator :-)).

I'm with you on being a cheapskate and having a watchmaker who reaps the benefits. Been focusing on collecting 36,000 bph watches recently. Just got 3 in today, and expect another tomorrow. Personally I think we need to have a coordinated attack on the affordable watch forum to teach those guys what a really affordable watch is (JK :-!)!
