I owned a Casio W-201 for many years. The 10 year battery finally gave
out, I bought a new battery and like with all my previous Casio watches proceeded to install it myself.
I opened the back, but could no find any way to get the old battery out! The Casio manual suggested it should be taken to a dealer, but this not easy in a remote place in Canada.
Still, I happened to go to the big city, and once there went to Sears who are dealers for this watch. I asked their watch repair man to put the new battery in while I watched. No problem, the repairman showed me how to get the battery out and how to install the new one, while he did all the work.
Problem was when he was finished, he could not get any of the 4 setting buttons to work!
Well, lucky me, the store still sold the same favourite watch and I bought a new one. But I asked the repair man to give me my old watch back, because I decided to see whether, with a bit of fiddling around, I can find out what why the setting buttons stopped working.
Once back home, I took the old watch apart again looking for any mechanical problem of the button operated switches, but could not find any.
In the process I took off the entire metal mask on the back of the watch display chip, which also holds the battery assembly. Inside I found a tiny loose spring. I read before on a Watchuseek post that this spring is part of the watch's alarm bell.
So now I am trying to find out where to put the spring back in its proper place and how to attach it there. I am also curious why the setting buttons do no longer work. Does anybody have any ideas?
