I understand the purpose of screw down pushers I believe Breitling Chrono SuperOcean have, where you have to unscrew the pusher before using it. But a friend of mine had a Omega SMP Chrono where you were able to use the pusher without unscrew the screw first.

Which is most common? And what is the idea of a screw down pusher if you don't use the screw?

I posted this question on the large public forum but didn't get the answers I wanted.........and a moderator kindly asked me to post here instead.

Screw down pushers are more common on watches that have the thick collar around each pusher. However, with the Seamasters, the collars are designed to absorb any impact that may hit the watch from certain angles.
Generally, the pushers that screw down do not necessarily make the watch more water resistant.

I don't think the pushers on the Seamaster Chronos screw down at all, so the question is moot.

Non-screw down pushers are the Norm on most chrono watches. Any watch that has Screw-down pushers will have a Higher Water Resistance / Rating than non-screw down pushers. That is the primary function of screw-down's, to achieve better water resistance.

Some pushers may need to screw down to prevent accidental pushing whilst in water which may compromise the water resistance.
Omega seamaster chrono pushers are water resistant to 300m even when pushed so presumably, theres no need to screw them down.

I have done that now. http://forums.watchuseek.com/showthread.php?p=2221355#post2221355
One reason why I posted here were to see if more brands had pushers like these?

Some examples of mine. The first 3 ( UN, Gevril, Alpha ) have functional lock down rings that must be unscrewed to actuate the chrono pushers. The last one ( Oris ) has the screw down look only as the rings don't function.

Thanks for posting this descending evolution, with the function being more decorative than truly necessary (or functional) as we travel downwards. :-d
