View Full Version : A Few Concerns And Sour Grapes

I sent my Speedypro (seven months old) to an authorized service provider in Detroit. The watch had stablized out to gaining about 25 seconds a day. A rate that all forum members who commented felt was excessive for a new watch. Hence the service. I could never get a promise date on the watch (at first it was three to four weeks, no guarantee) but once the authorized service provider realized it was a warranty repair it went to the back of the que. 3 to 4 weeks became "five to six weeks for a warranty repair." It was finally returned after five weeks. I was excited and could hardly wait to see how well it did. I wound and set the watch when I picked it up at the post office. Then, the next morning at 6:00 a.m. I wound it and set it to the atomic clock. The next morning I checked and it was 4 seconds slow. Lots closer, but a little disappointing. However thinking that it would vary I wound it once more, reset it and checked it again the next morning; 11 seconds slow. Now I was really getting disappointed. This morning I got up, and took the watch down stairs and noticed it had stopped. It had stopped just a few seconds, it appeared, earlier. I wound it reset it and all seemed okay. "Perhaps," I thought to myself, "I just forgot to wind it the day before." However, this evening when I heard the mantle clock chime 8:00 p.m. I glanced down at my wrist and discovered my watch was OVER FIVE MINUTES SLOW!!! :-X

I've reset it, I will check it again tomorrow a.m., but it looks like it will have to go back to Detroit. I am not at all pleased with this kind and quality of service. Two questions: should I return it to the people who just serviced the watch? Does anyone have any recommendations/suggestions regarding a different service center? I really don't want to wait five more weeks for my watch to be adjusted again. Or fouled up even worse.

Thanks for listening to me whine.

That is very disappointing O| I also have a Speedy, I just bought it used. It was running approx. 20+ seconds fast, so It's at a local watchmaker's now getting regulated. It's been there for about 2 weeks and I should have it next week.

Since it's under warranty, I'd probably try a different location. Of course if you went back to Detroit, you'd probably get a different technician and they'd put you at the top of the list so you wouldn't have to wait so long again...I'd call them and if Detroit would get it done sooner, I'd send it back to them.

Hi Pastor,my Railmaster was not running COSC spec's,off to Detroit,it was 6 to 8 week's? Well,it was alot better,but...it now only had a 17 hour reserve!! So.... my AD said "let's seen it to New Jersey" He think's they do a better job there!?! We will find out ,oh, maybe 5-8 week's? I feel your pain. John Wilson.

Really sorry to hear about all the trouble, not to mention the horrible waiting. Maybe that's normal, but I'd be a little irritated that they sent you to the back of the line, because it was warranty service.
Do you know if they did anything, other than regulate it?
Personally, I wouldn't want to go back to the place that failed you twice already. I'd take it to a good local watchmaker and have it regulated. It shouldn't cost much and, it would be worth it to me.
Good luck!

I'll see what Jim thinks about it on Monday. There isn't much he can really do but I am certain he'll know more than I. Until then I'm charting the watch's performance. I've got this sneaking feeling that the power reserve is in the 12 - 15 hour range. We'll see.

Have a great Sunday!

When I did my test (twice) I picked three,Bond SMP=50hours,black face SMP=50h 21min. rail=17 hours. John Wilson. P.S. I look at the 44 hour power reserve as a guaranty! If it's alot less then something must be wrong!

totally agree, the power reserve is not an estimation, it should not be half what is sold....
