What are the chances of getting one? What is the going rate on a good condition one?

A quick search in google and you'll find a site that's got several up for sale around the $2.5k mark... no idea if that's good or not but at least there are some about!

Are you sure? Before the Omegamania auction an average to good condition PloProf was anywhere from $3.5-$4K - and that's before any servicing/restoration at Bienne. Now, who knows? That one event drove prices into the stratosphere.
There are/were usually 3-4 Ploprofs on Timeman.net, but I noticed that immediately after Omegamania they disappeared. Maybe they were snapped up by savvy investors after the auction, or maybe they have been temporarily removed pending a price re-think.
What I do know is that if you see a PloProf for sale at a firm $2,500, you had better walk away from it without a second thought.

It may sound like a silly question but why?

The Watchco Proplof has been long gone for a quite some time apparently they do not update their website there were guys on the dive forum calling Australia about the watch. If Timeman has them at that price I would think if you were in the market even to flip it would be a hell of an investment.

I believe that Timeman link is to an old section of his site that is not updated.
If you go to his home site and then click on the vintage sports section you will see his Ploprof have no price listed. If you email him he will send you the price. Trust me it is well north of $2,500 USD.
He is the fellow that mentioned he rethought his prices after the recent action house prices were realized.
Prior his Flightmasters were listed (on the updated page) at $1,600 USD and up. Now post auction .... no price listed and when you email.... same story.
Prices well north of that now.
Sorry to dash anyones hopes.

Seven years ago I was offered a good condition PloProf for $2,000. That was the going rate then, before the explosion of interest in these models. I emailed Andy at Timeman over a year ago, and he told me that prices, at that time, were in the $3.5-4k range, and rising. Even before Omegamania, this model was getting a lot of action. A number of guys on the Dive Forum bought them; one bought two if I recall. Prices on the bay were rising. Combine the consensus that there were only about 1,000 units ever manufactured by Omega, strong demand before Omegamania, and the utterly insane results for PloPofs at that auction, and you've got a sellers market. That's why it would make no sense to sell low, unless there were some serious condition/authenticity issues - in which case the piece would hold no interest for me and I would walk.
I don't know what prices will settle at, but it wouldn't surprise me that it will be in a broad $5-$10k range dependent upon condition, and whether it is a first or second series piece.

Omegamania has muddied the market up pretty well with not only this watch but the 1,000m Seamaster as well, if someone had these watches now would be the time to pull the trigger before the market resettles back to this galaxy.
I would expect these models to settle into the double red Sea Dweller range pretty comfortably and steady with the 1,000m SM maybe going higher yet.

Just to add some context, here are the results for the three PloProf watches auctioned at Omegamania, converted at today's rate from CHF to USD:
1st. Gen. 1972 inverse red button - $20,194
1st. Gen. 1973 - $28,849
2nd. Gen. 1974 - $14,424
The excitement and celebrity factors of placing a winning bid at such a high-profile event cannot be ignored, and undoubtedly drove prices high on the night. But the days of a <$4k PloProf are clearly over.
Sorry. I should have stated that the prices include the buyer's premium. Not sure what that is, but I think it is normally 10-15%. So you can lower the prices quoted by at least 10% to get a "true" figure. Comforting, eh?!

This is bad news. I like the watch but not that much.

I bought 2 before Omegamania for around $6000 and sent them to Bienne for complete restoration. They should be back sometime in the next 4-6 weeks. I suspect if I bought them now the price would be somewhat higher.
i am hoping my investment will payoff.

This little (or rather large) gem just fell into my posession, my job is to get it restored.
Any help would be appreciated - I want it to be to OEM spec. Thanks. Jd

Id say posting it to bienne for restoration is the best way to go about it, as it looks like it needs alot of work done and a lot of new parts.
But at the end youll have a very desirable watch !
