View Full Version : How Many Distinct 36,000 bph Movements Are There?
Ray916MN
February 12th, 2006, 21:56
Many manufacturers have sold watches with 36,000 bph movements.
So far I've been able to find watches with these movement frequencies from the following manufacturers: Zenith, Movado, Girard Perragaux, Zodiac, Cyma, Favre Leuba, Longines, Lucien Piccard Bucherer, Rolex, Concord, Eterna, Seiko, Citizen, Panerai and Ulysses Nardin. Who else made watches with "hi beat" movements?
Does anyone know how many distinct movements have been made which have featured this frequency and who made them and what watches they were used in?

Donīt know how much time you have to check out yourself but Ranfft has a database including more than 3ooo movements and here we go (http://www.ranfft.de/cgi-bin/bidfun-db.cgi?00&ranfft&&uswk)

Thanks Gents! I looked through the site yesterday, and did a search, but somehow didn't get the results that Doc got (hmmm did I use 36,000 instead of 36000?). Any way, interesting as I was not aware that there were manual watches produced running at this frequency, nor that Mido or Nivada also had models using high frequency movements. I never would have guessed that GP produced so many different version HF movements. This info also finally explains the reference I've seen to the 2824 being set up to run at 36,000 bph (Ulysses Nardin).
Thanks again!

Too bad their era was shortlived and tuning fork watches with an even higher frequency became all the rage!
Cheers

Ray - Happy to have helped out for a change - usually I'm asking for info;-)
How on Earth do you folks get such close and clear photos - that movement shot of the Longines is fantastic!:-p

Zenith soldiers on though. The site shows that not only have they been prolific but they've updated their movements as recently as the mid 90s.
Zenith = El Primero!
BTW, super nice Ultra-Chron pic!

Based on the information I've collected so far there were 7 different manufacturers of 36,000 bph wrist watch movements:
A. Schild
Eterna
Zenith/Movado
Eberhard/Favre-Leuba/Zodiac/Girard Perregaux (jointly developed from an A Schild movement and the earliest commercially available)
Longines
Citizen
Seiko
Zenith is the only manufacturer continuing to make hi beat movements.
There are at least 20 makers who have sold or sell hi beat movement watches. I've figured out which makers used whose movements, excepting the following: Cyma, Lucien Piccard and Bucherer.
Anyone know whose hi-beat movements these makers used? What movement manufacturers did I miss?

Do you have a good picture of your 6651 movement dive watch? I've never seen a good photo of one of these.

Ray,
I'll try to take some acceptable photos tomorrow in the daylight. The pictures I took this evening are terrible. I am definitely not a photographer.

Here it is. I cannot get a picture to do this watch justice. The dial is the white "burst" type typical of the 60's early 70's.

Thanks for the pics Steve. Are there really no markings on this watch indicating that it has a hi-beat movement? Did all Admiral dive watches come with this movement?

Ray,
The marking that indicates that this watch should have a 6651 movement is inside the back cover. It has the calibre number (6651) under the case model number. I enclosed a picture of the back cover. It's not very clear , but I think you'll get the idea. (I took it a few years ago when I decided to pull it out of the drawer and overhaul it.) Longines produced very understated watches. I have not seen any of their hi-beat watches that indicate the calibre on their dial other than the Ultra-Chron model.
Not all Admirals came with this movement. I've seen them with earlier automatics as well. I am not sure of the calibre numbers. This is something I wish I knew a lot more about.
Best Regards,
Steve

Just stumbled into this site. It is a reference site for Longines collectors (http://timewatches.us/Longines/e/home.html).
This page is specific to the 6551 (http://timewatches.us/Longines/e/4to15/11_6651.html) It characterizes the 6551 as a low beat version of the 430 movement, running at 28,800 vph. Ever had your watch on a vibrograph?
