Who received the 28 Speedmasters that spent a year on Mir?

Where are those Watches now?

 Um...the KGB? Perhaps, if they made it back to earth in better
shape than the Mir Station itself, it's likely that they were kept safe
in Star City until the U.S.S.R. went bye-bye. After that, the sky's
the limit (ha)...

Well, that's a question not likely to be solved. Like so much other
State property, they were probably stolen and sold on the black
market, and could very well be on the wrists of some poor merchant
or farmer who has no clue as to how special these are, and simply
likes his "new" watch because he doesn't have to buy batteries for
it. Sadly, the significance of a flown Speedmaster is lost to individuals
who are trying to feed their families and keep a roof over their heads.
After the watches "changed hands" a few times, the fact that they
were flown was probably forgotten along the way. This is only a bit
of a guess on my part, of course. Maybe a few of the watches ended
up in some museum in/near Moskva. Have any of you had the opportunity
to visit?

I have quite a few Soviet military badges, medals and other State
articles that all "escaped" military facilities during the late 1980's
and 1990's when things were in transition in the new Russia. Since
that time, I have become friends with a few former Soviet military
men (buck privates) who have told me of outragious theft and black
market activity in the Russian military back in those days.

Still, have a look at my second post in the thread "STS - ID The
Watch", where a nice Speedy Pro is shown inside the Russian zone
of the ISS. b-)
