I came across these pics on another forum and thought the population here would be interested. (Sorry if I misidentify anything... I'm guessing on a few.)

This was quite a find, some great shots! I've driven the two accessible (to civilians) main road borders of Nellis, and couldn't get a decent view of much more than a row or three of F-16's parked on the ramp. Obviously taken on the base, I suspect the DOD might be a bit miffed at these, but they are great eye candy to us airplane nuts ;-).

The one you were not sure of, I wonder if it might possibly be a C-130 (or other transport). I recall seeing a picture from a famous email of a C-130 Hercules spewing flares like no other a/c I've ever seen. It was titled "Angel Fire", and wa so named because of the angel wing shape created by the deployed flares (when viewing the aircraft from the nose). Looked like great wings of fire!

Thanks for sharing these!

Bummer... I guess you weren't there at the right times. If you check on Youtube there's two vids of the demo, one of which was taken from the highway (LINK (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyvKxH0k6O8)). The second one is of the A-10 Close Air Support / Blackhawk mission "rescuing the downed pilot" (LINK (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_IiAa8JxxQ&mode=related&search)) which looks like it was filmed from a lot closer in some sort of spectator area.

This is what was said about the demonstration:

Yeah, the guys in the stands all said the A-10 demo was the best. Mainly because the fast movers and bombers were dropping bombs quite a ways out in front of the stands in a dry lake bed whereas the A-10s were shooting the 30mm gun and 2.75in rockets almost abeam the stands - so you were up close and personal with them. The show had a 4-ship of A-10s start at med alt (15K) and do a high angle strafe pass and then descend to low alt and set up a 4 ship wheel around the stands and constantly be shooting and firing rockets for 20 min or so. It was a meat grinder essentially where there was always an A-10 rolling in and shooting as soon as the previous guy was off (as you can see in the pics). The scenario was that the A-10's were there to provide CAS for a downed pilot - so they softened up the "TGT area" right in front of the stands for about 10 min and then escorted the two Blackhawks in and then proivided cover fire while they extracted the pilot. The intent is to always be able to be in a position to shoot to suppress any enemy fire - especially while the Helo's are nearby! I've seen that exercise from the ground before up close and personal and its impressive! You can see why the A-10 is so effective because they get REALLY low and can stay right in the TGT area and turn on a dime - whereas the fast movers like the Strike Eagle would have a hard time being able to do that kind of immediate close in work as effectively. Horses for courses like anything else.

I think MaxStatic & lysanderxiii are right though... when I got home last night I blew up the image in Photoshop and the engines are definitely very close to the fuselage. I'm pretty sure it's the B-1 with the wing swept fully forward.

Of course it figures many aircraft probably have similar countermeasures, and the B One should be top notch, as it's quite the high tech bird. The B One was one of the few fixed wing A/C I got view of in Baghdad, just at the beginning of the "surge", late February. On my first sighting of it, I saw a squiggly smoke trail and a flash, unsure if it was countermeasures, a weapon lunched from it, or a weapon launched at it. Never heard of it dropping any munitions while I was there.

One day, a lone B One appeared over Baghdad, tearing up the sky. Stayed for several days, flying sorties at various hours, some after dark (I was on the roof of the new embassy one night working at getting materials in by crane when it made several passes directly over the embassy. Didn't hear it until it passed, and then could barely see it. And it's not even a stealth aircraft!

During the day, only other fixed wings we saw in that time period was a high flying jet while the B One was in the area (I suspected AWACS?) and my last week I saw a Predator UAV up high (heard a buzzing sound after the sound of two passing Blackhawks faded, and scanned to find the drone). Other than that, I spotted one F 15 jinking up high one time. Lots of helicopters all the time though, and they dropped flares like they were confetti b-).

Bummer... I guess you weren't there at the right times. Heheh.... stoy of my life~!

Cool links there too!
