I've been bitten by the Breitling bug and am considering an Emergency Mission II within the next year. I love the look of the watch and the whole emergency transmitter thing. However, spending over 5,000 on a quartz watch sounds like a little much. Any thoughts on the watch.

And it is NOT just a quartz watch. The thermocompensated SuperQuartz movement in that beauty is absolutely incredible. Try to find another watch brand meeting COSC quartz specifications at .07 sec/day max variation (25.5 sec/yr) in five different positions and three different temps. Breitling advertises 15 sec/yr but many of our members report SQ accuracy of better than 5 seconds per year. My SQ B-1 is the only quartz watch I own and it gets the most wrist time by far. It is the reference for all my Breitling mechanicals. All the ladies in my family have SQ Breitlings also and although they may not appreciate the incredible accuracy and robustness of the pieces as much as I do, they are extremely happy with their watches. Further, the miniaturized emergency locater transmitter in the watch elevates it to another level... far, far, far above any other quartz wristwatch in the world. Rest assured, the EM is all that it is cracked up to be, and more... :-!

Bman,
I adore my Emergency Mission.....
Not sure what you mean about a II? The newer EM's have had some cosmetic changes applied, but I've personally never seen them referred to as II's. But I could be wrong….I may stand to be corrected...
Anyway, I've had my EM for exactly a year now, and I still get as much joy putting it on my wrist each day, as the first time I wore it.
Don't know what else to say........and as for being a “quartz", it's a Thermocompensated Quartz, one of the most accurate time pieces on the planet.
But, from being a member on this forum, I have grown to realise that a few people have a "snob-value" attached to "mechanical" watches and they won't ever entertain quartz. That's a personal thing which you'll need to decide. Personally because the heart of a beast is crystal rather than sprung metal, doesn't leave me with a feeling of inadequacy.
I didn't choose the EM because it was Quartz or Mechanical, I chose it because it was in my mind, stunning to look at, beautifully constructed, highly reliable and with the added bonus that someday, it might just might, save my life.
Before plumping for the EM, I weighed up the entire range and narrowed it down to the Emergency Vs the Navitimer. I loved the classic beauty of the Navi, but I always felt the Classic E was, for me, the quintessential Breitling, (the B which I associated most with the Brand). I then discovered the Mission, I thought it provided a little of the classic B style combined with the state of the art technology which I associated with the E. Not many ADs had/have EMs in the window so it took me a while to actually see one in the flesh. When I eventually got to try an EM on my wrist it was love at first sight. No question, it was love then and it still is now.
On my wrist, it reeks of quality and presence, and as I've said before, the amount of conversations struck up due to the attention it commands, have been incredible.
I love my EM, and I look forward to providing it with a few siblings, and who knows, some of which might even be mechanical. ;-)
