4N contemporary Haute Horlogerie

The watch brand 4N is presenting a watchmaking intricacy which is completely original and innovative. It highlights the unique assets that define the brand 4N, marked by an obvious return to a clear and effective numerical display by reinventing the jumping minute hand.

4N, while remaining within the mainstream of the new haute horlogerie, it distinguishes itself by the creation of a digital display, extremely effective in its ergonomics and spectacular in its shape, never before carried out (typographical frame 5.5 mm).

Let us explain the origin of the name 4N. To be read in its English version 4 numbers, it reflects the 4-digit display of a dozen hours, hours, dozens of minutes and minutes. The said rhythm sequence of the display reveals these original states. The brand identity, summed up in it's logo, displays a character in counter-form, beneath a regular vertical sequence.

Model
The 4N-MVT01/D01 Model is the first of the mark. It’s embodied in a mouvement of manufacture, defined by a mechanical complication with manual assembly and a 12-hour digital display. It is based on an intelligent configuration of intermittent rotating discs. Three subgroups of discs, , kept in cage structures, light up to reveal the time according to a jumping display as the minutes pass (4 discs for the hour, 5 for the minutes, and 1 for the ten minutes). The device uses a system of jump by constant force guaranteeing a minimum expenditure of energy whatever the degree of movement.

The patented model solves delicate technical issues. The one size of the figures (5.5 mm) leads to a demanding implementation, based on a totally manual manufacturing process. The movement, stems from a complex setting of the kinematic discs, to solve problems of balance, inertia, and friction for optimum movement and a minimum expenditure of energy.

This model is available in 18K white gold, titanium or platinum. The bracelet which may be selected from a range of high-quality materials, is mounted on the box by an automatic strap system and allows for lengthening as required. The model is also equipped with a time setting where it is easy to adjust the hour digits independently of the minutes.

The model 4N-MVT01/D01 Black Edition (unique piece) is available for sale and visible at Colette 213 av St Honoré, 75001 PARIS, June 14 to July 15 2013.
4N, achieved a level of excellence
The partnership with Renaud and Papi (Audemars Piguet Renaud & Papi) clarifies and highlights the performance ambition sustained by the brand. Assurance of high-tech and exceptional technical prowess, APRP today guarantees maintenance and regular monitoring of production, applied and sustainable. From the industrial research to the prototype to the delicate operation of finish and assembly, the collaboration with Renaud and Papi places 4N at a level of excellence in the horology market.

The partnership has a number of technical advances on the model of the iconic brand (4N-MVT01/D01), both in the sophistication of the finishes crafted entirely by hand and the final details worthy of the finest timepieces, as well as in the selection and implementation of exceptional quality materials.

This level of excellence is notably apparent through the enhancement of the screw balance placed on the dial, and of a movement of 10-days power reserve built around a double barrel. Some 514 components, all hand decorated with 78 rubies, form this exceptional movement. Their balance in this model makes it a particularly innovative work that reflects the audaciousness, and mastery of this young, independent brand.
Watchmaker & Designer
In 2009, François Quentin is the founder of the 4N watch brand.
As freelance designer since 1986, F. Quentin, in the world of watchmaking, has helped design many contemporary models for French and Swiss watch brands. Among the most famous, we note that in 2004 he co-founded the HAUTLENCE watchmaking brand for the HL models and co-designed the Louis Vuitton flag-ship model, the Tambour.

At age 50, François Quentin has gradually added a variety of skills to his portfolio. Crazy about mechanics and computer science, the designer works in business sectors demanding both wide-ranging and special abilities, covering the world of the machine-tool, the eyeglass trade and Web design. F.Quentin graduated in watch repair since 2006 and can now clearly show his expertise in watch design.
I think some people also called them Tiananmen watches as per the logo. These are well built watches IMO that I believe was made before the factory was instructed to make watches for popular mass.:-d
The one on the right has a very early movement of 1973. That should be one of the earliest tongji watches ever made. The movement image was borrowed. A clean early tongji Beijing watch of 1973-74 is no longer easy to find now.b-)

I tried to find out for myself but really couldn't come up with much. These are the sellers pix, their pix are never very good and they never have a shot of the movement.

It was the plain screw back case back that drew my attention so I grabbed it while I had the chance. I've bought several watches off this seller in the past. It's supposed to be running, and I got it for $19.95, so I figured I really couldn't go wrong since it's a Bulova.

I acquired this Caravelle 666ft about a year ago but never really paid much attention to it. The bezel insert is polished down with the numbers now missing but but it's growing on me. I had always intended on replacing the insert and now I have doubts. To me the bezel it has a nautical look like the circular window-surround on ship. I'm looking for some candid opinions on whether this looks:

1. stupid and buy a $40 bezel insert you cheap a$$,
or
2. cool with a tasteful mod.
or
3. ?

.......... you can never leave. Immortal words from the song 'Hotel California' and in many ways exactly how it is with Doxa watches.

I've been away from the forum for quite a while now. Dropped in once in a while but never really posted much. I guess once the DWL book was done and I had "my own" Doxa, there really wasn't anywhere else to go. I'd got to the top of my own Everest, so to speak. But then there was the 10 Year book. I'd been plugging away at it for quite some time but was just never able to finish it. I guess I really had to force myself to do it and in the end it turned out great, but the fact that I could only do a very expensive print on demand paperback version was a bit disappointing. Good as the ebook version is, nothing beats the feel of leafing through pages of photos. I guess I was kinda burned after that and with changing job and moving and having to travel to Equatorial Guinea, Trinidad, Canada and Mexico on a regular basis, life just ran away from me.

I hadn't spoke to Rick in months and months and so today I dropped him an email and he rang me. We talked for what seemed like hours. Catching up, righting wrongs, and planning how to take over the dive watch world. I went easy on him and never mentioned flat casebacks or flat crystals once.... well ok maybe once... or twice. Might even have been three times, but no more than that :-d

What we talked about lit the fire again and got me excited about what Doxa is trying to do both in terms of new watches and in terms of being involved in something that has tremendous interest in the dive world. I made me think about why I keep coming back to old faithful....

I've got more watches than I need and have a pretty good selection ranging from some very nice Rolex, Breitling and Doxas but my 45 year old SUB 300T keeps pulling me back. Sure the 2-tone Blue Rolex looks flash and will probably get me mugged but it doesn't start conversations the way the SUB 300T does. Most people probably think the Rolex is fake anyway.

My 300T can pull a conversation from NoDeCo bezels, orange dials, Cussler, Pitt, Cousteau, Waterman, the Diving With Legends contributors and any number of stories about the guys I have met through the Doxa forum, including our very own Searaiders.

The great thing about a Doxa is there are not many of them about but when you meet someone else wearing one you know you are part of a rare group. Bit like the Hells Angels but with a better dental plan....

Its nice to be back. I've missed being able to prattle on to a captive audience b-) Be prepared for more...oh yea and photos. Lots of photos.
