    Buying First Poljot

    Hi all,

I'm looking at buying a Poljot alarm watch. I'm after something a bit dressy and have seen a Poljot on Ebay in brumer.aggbrumers store described as a "rareMen alarm watch vintage st-l gold plated PA3".

I like a few models he has but have not seen the same watches on any other sites:-S. Has anyone bought from him?

What do you call the style with the band attached from the centre?

I've been wearing the same watch for the last 37 years (since I was 6 years old) a mechanical Swiss Felicia but would like something fancier for dressy wear.

Yes I kind of figured the "rare" bit was sales talk.

    Hi and welcome!

That watch looks 'kosher' but I agree with Brian - it certainly isn't rare or vintage. If it is to your taste though, why not? The price is OK rather than stunning - you could find cheaper if you shop around.

I suggest you have a look at www.poljot24.de ,www.aviator-watch.com and www.russiansouveniers.com to see the range of new Poljot alarm watches available (i.e. lots!), and/or trawl eBay for some vintage models, which are usually cheaper.

A fellow member Mibo has a nice gold model as I recall...

    G'day Glenn.

The watch that you're looking at with the T-bar lugs is commonly sold as the 'Basilika' (for reasons that are a complete mystery to me). It is not rare, so look around a bit.

Last year I borrowed one from a friend and can confirm that it does look very dressy on the wrist. I would recommend a fatter strap (not wider) than the one supplied as the case is quite wide and bulbous (a strap can easily be cut to fit). The onion crowns make it very easy to wind and set while wearing, but as with all modern Poljot alarms it is not quite as loud as I would like.

    From Wikipedia:

"The Latin word basilica (derived from Greek, Basiliké Stoŕ, Royal Stoa), was originally used to describe a Roman public building (as in Greece, mainly a tribunal), usually located at the centre of a Roman town (forum). In Hellenistic cities, public basilicas appeared in the 2nd century BC".

Usually on the dials of the Poljot Basilika there is a stylized basilica as logo (on the Poljot International models), probably referred to the St. Basil's church in the Red Square.
The watch in itself is not rare, but i have seen quite few pieces recently.

Thanks all for replying and thanks for the links. I'll have a look and decide which one to buy. Another one I had seen that initially I wasn't sure if I liked but is growing on me is a Poljot Alarm Submariner with the partial (three quarter) cover with 3 screws.
