Why do my pics appear so HUGE on the Forum?

I have to be honest, if I write a post and add photos they are usually done on "auto" for quickness. I know I have to start taking more interest to get better quality photos. But why do my pictures appear so large? They are usually hovering around the forum limit of approx 850k sometimes they are too large and not accepted. I found by dropping to about 3mp helps but then I lose the clarity. How can I overcome my problem?

I use a Canon PowerShot A1000IS. I usually am in macro, fairly close to the object with no flash.

Just resize it on your pc. Use GIMP or something.

Yes, try to resize the horizontal and vertical pixel dimensions to smaller.
