Confused Please help date a Howard Keystone pocket watch

For my birthday, my sister gave a gold pocket watch that belong to my grandfather, who passed away in 1953, the year I was born. On the face it says it is a "Howard", but in the case it says "Keystone 14K" with the following serial number: 156389. Can anyone tell how old it is? It is a beautiful watch, in good condition and seems to keep good time. I'll try to post photos tomorrow.

Only the serial number on the watch-mechanism will be any good in dating it. Until we get it, we can't tell anything. Don't run the watch too much until you get it serviced.

A sharp close-up of the movement would be helpful for ID. Keystone Howards were made from 1903 until 1930.

Thanks Ron! I will take it in to my watchmaker to be cleaned and oiled. My sister says it has not been run in at least 12 years so I imagine that the movement is pretty dry. Your advice is wise. The time frame you give also fits since my grandfather emigrated to US in 1911. When it's serviced, I'll ask for the serial number on the movement. Frankly, I'm a little scared to open it myself. I'll probably need to get it appaised since it is gold.

You can open the watch to show what is inside without sending it to a watchmaker. Try here:

Thanks, Eric! I have a watch knife and it was easy to open the case. It is really clean inside and the serial number is 1204845.

If my resources are correct, your watch dates to ca. 1913/1914.

Thanks for your help. That's much older than we thought. A true antique. It is in very good conditions considering it is almost 100 yers old.
