    Zenith Sporto

I picked up this Zenith as I found the overall condition to be OK, the face is clearly faded but the case and movement looks to be good. My first Zenith actually, it is a Sporto and with serial number 5320977 I think it might be from 1962. The movement is a 18 jewel caliber 120, it has a hacking function. Can someone give me more information on the timeframe of the Sporto model? This is a bit on the sideline from my pocketwatch collection, appreciate any input.

Same here - very nice. I think you'll have to wait for Hartmut for more info.

Many of my pictures were posted via Webshots which has now closed - and so have disappeared from WUS. Sorry.

Please don't PM me to ask for a valuation - I won't attempt one.

Thanks all for your comments. I suppose it is an OK watch for a novice in the world of Zenith. I hope Hartmut comes by, as I really would like to know more on the Sporto name.

Crikey! - that looks almost squeaky clean! The age looks about right - in which case the case serial number is one of the last of its type (in 1963, they switched to the ###A### system). Also, the Cal. 120 was made up to 1963. It is often associated particularly with the "Pilot" line and may well have been originally designed specifically for these watches (direct central seconds, hack feature).

The "Sporto" line was introduced in the mid fifties and was simply intended as a line of functional, robust movements with water, dust and shock protection and magnetism resistance (at least according to the adverts!). It was intended to represent a decent, unpretentious watch for the average Joe in the street. Probably Zenith's answer to the Omega Seamaster.....
