    Re: LM-5 Chronograph?

I had a closer look at the Ronda chronograph movements and I noticed one thing that can really change the look of the watch. In Canon's designs, the hands on the sub-dials are on the same level as the main hands. However, if you look at the Ronda specs, you will see that the sub-dials should be moved up slightly. It'll change the look of the watch significantly...and I don't like it...

The Sellita SW500 would fit the bill nicely...

Tried to adjust the register locations but not their displays. It's not perfect but gives you an idea.

And an all black version with BG W9 lume instead of green C3. Makes the black pop with contrast better.

There she is! Has the look of a classic. Raising the subdials I consider an improvement in that they respect the big date.

I agree about using a quality quartz movement.

The recent release of many mechanical watches by small watch companies will hit a ‘bump in the road’ when it is time to service or repair mechanical watches.

The amount of good watch repair facilities has not grown to match the release of so many mechanical in the low $1000 watch category.

It does not take much knowledge to change batteries and have watches checked for leaking seals.

Most of us who collect watches are already experienced enough and have the proper tools and knowledge to do these simple battery changes, and most watch repair facilities can easily test seals.

I agree with what you say. Mechanical movements have a life span that require significant dollars after significant dollars have been spent for the initial purchase. A Rondo quartz movement fails, you stick in a replacement movement for under $100.

This is the by-product of ETA splaying before us the dog eat dog competitive nature of the foolery of mass-produced mechanical movements. It's a wake up call I didn't expect and has happened.

    Re: LM-5 Chronograph?

We buy our watches, primarily, by how they look. Quartz has been relegated to inferior/cheaper clothes. Do we really think that ETA taking its mechanical ball home will immediately produce other Swiss movements in their absence? Of course we have Asian alternatives, but we look at them and know we need years if not decades to judge their quality.

All the numbers are together in one place now, and this project is a go! We will use the Ronda 5020.B big date movement, and the watch will be Swiss made. We just have to finalize the design. The case manufacturer can have the cases ready in 60 days, so even with some delays, we may actually have this available for sale in June. We will try to set an introductory price around $349, but I'm not sure yet if that's possible.

That's great, Mitch. I'm glad you went with the Ronda. My experience with the Ronda quartz has been a long-term great one.

Life is short. How sad to have realized in your death bed that you've worn a crappy watch as a "daily beater" for most of your days.
