European based watch companies will give a minimum 2 years warranty. It's the law (Directive 1999/44/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 May 1999). Switzerland follows the same rules.

I believe the vast majority of Swiss and German Watches have a transferable warranty. Invoices are never requested for repair. The only important element is the warranty certificates filled with the watch serial number, the date of purchase and the authorized dealer stamp. The name and address of the buyer is never mentioned. An this is normal: many people buy watches as presents.

I would think they mean 2 years based on the serial number regardless of who owns it. I'm sure some Koboldian out there could probably chime in on the warranty transfer question.
