Lightbulb NEW MUDMAN OPTION TO THE BOILING MOD!!

Hi Guys, many of you have seen the mod to help alleviate the very stiff buttons on the Mudman and possibly other models as well. I was to fearful to put my new GY-1JF in a pot of boiling water... so I tried an alternative out and it seems to have worked!

I simply took a pan (no pot needed- saves water!) filled up with water and set it on the stove. Once reaching boiling point, I took a pair of tongs and held the watch in the steam. I rotated it to hit all areas and it spent no more than a total of 2-3 minutes in the steam. Then, TURN OFF THE STOVE!... let the watch cool and dry it off, then try the buttons. The buttons are easier to operate now by 25% roughly. Hey it made a difference and didn't require any time in a pot of boiling water.

Try it if you'd like- just something I wanted to share for those like myself who are too afraid to drop it in like a lobster

Aren't the buttons on the GY not as stiff as the 9000s/GX-56s?

Re: NEW MUDMAN OPTION TO THE BOILING MOD!!

I think the construction of the 9300 Mudman is very different from the G-9XXX. The button covers are no longer molded to the bezel from some pics I saw. The mud-protection comes from some extra large o-rings beneath buttons and bezel from what I saw. At least it looks like that in pics from kung-fusion:

Still the steam might soften it because it softens the resin probably.

I don't think the buttons are hard enough to press to warrant any modifiation. One of the things I love about the new mudman is the large, easy to press, sealed buttons.

It might work to put one in the top of the dishwasher at the end of the cycle while it's still hot for a few minutes. I didn't soften mine because my husband wears it and he has issues with accidentally setting the buttons off because of the shape of his wrist. Stiff is better for him.

Now I feel kind of bad for "bashing". Like I wrote - it could make a difference by softening the resin even though the button construction is different from the older Mudman models. But I also wasn't a big fan of the boiling procedure on the older Mudman - because those buttons were hard to press even without the bezel .

    cheers, Sedi

Re: NEW MUDMAN OPTION TO THE BOILING MOD!!

I don't think the new Mudman's buttons are particularly difficult to press (unlike some older models) but it is a very good idea with the steam. I might try that to soften the resin on some old models. I sometimes have difficulty when trying to clean vintage g-shocks. In fact, removing old bezels can be a difficult task, because of the risk of tearing them, so softening them up with some steam might help.

Agreed, I may try the steam trick on some other watches just to see if it helps
