    Re: Timex and Casio

I also own both a Casio 5600 and a Timex Ironman (30-Lap). From a functional standpoint, the Timex is far superior IMO. The Timex display is larger and easier to read, the menu system is very intuitive, and the features of the Timex are also much more abundant. The Timex has multiple time zones, alarms, and an occasion reminder. Timex buttons are large and easy to press. The FLIX activated illumination is cool.
That said, I actually prefer the 5600! The build quality feels MUCH more solid. The Timex feels really cheap and flimsy (eg crystal and caseback are thin). The Casio feels like a watch that will last much longer. With my Mil-Shock modded 5600, I think it is more comfortable to wear. The big plus with the 5600 is that it displays the time in CDT and chrono modes. The 5600 also looks better to me (classic timeless style) and has just the basic features that I really need. I don't really need the extra features of the Timex.
I wound up returning the Timex (still have another one as a beater at work). I tried on a Timex Shock model but it was too big for me. The metal bezel looks like it could scratch really easy.

    Re: Timex and Casio

Almost all of the Timex Ironman's (Ironmen?) have glass crystals. A year ago it was mostly just the shock resistant line. Pretty much agree with what others have said are Timex and Casio's strong points. I also like the strap on the Timex better. I have the same watch as the OP and can tell you that it is the most comfortable I have.

Another nice feature that model has is that while not having world time, it has a second timezone which can be set to 24 hour time will the first is not 24 hour. That makes it nice for us US guys that don't run on military time, but like to keep track of Zulu in 24 hour time

I do like that watch. How is the mirror in low light? Is it still that legible? Are there lighting conditions in which it's not?

You know, I really liked the original Ironman - a very classy design in my opinion. The new ones all look too cheesy - despite the better engineered module, they just don't have the "soul" that G-Shocks have.

I find it very legible, RWare. The display tends to reflect any ambient light available, even in low-visibility conditions. In total darkness you just use the EL, which is very cool too.

Yes .. that are awesome. If you know where to find new-old-stock then please let me know.

I couldn't track them down, so I ended up with the 20th Anniversary Ironman ....

    Re: Timex and Casio

If we could combine the strengths of a G Shocks, Timex Ironman and Suunto......... Now that would be sweet.

    Please don't take this wrong.

I've only had G Shocks for a short time compared to some of the more veteran members here. But I am firm believe in G shocks.

    Re: Timex and Casio

one feature of Timex that i really like is the multi-lap stopwatch. i use that when i am doing laps in the pool.

also, the start/stop button is located on the front of the watch and i find that it is easier to press as compared to casio's which i need to press on the side of the watch.

on the hand, i have found Timex watches to be not very long lasting and after awhile, you cannot find replacement parts for it. i have a Timex that is still working but the strap has disintegrated. i cannot find a replacement strap for it and it is now just laying on my table

Yes the best of Timex, Casio and Suunto would be some good watch, even if not so affordable.

    Re: Timex and Casio

Although I have no doubt that the Timex's are solid and have some great features they just don't cut it in the design stakes in my opinion.

They look cheap ( which of course they are and is no bad thing ) and the large digits don't appeal to me.

G's have the overall package and the bits they miss don't really cause me any concern as I simply use them to tell the time and occasionally as stopwatch.

I don't disrespect Timex or those who own them but their just not to my taste.

    Watches are frickin evil!
