Read Orwell's 1984 for a good illustration. One very good measure of a population's intelligence is their language proficiency. A narrow vocabulary is generally indicative of lower intelligence. What you were observing is the concept in action. Less information is conveyed, less is then understood (Per Korzybski: If you don't have a word for something, you can't think about it much less convey the idea). I have been observing this in the decades since it was pointed out to me in a semantics course I took in high school. Sad to watch people getting dumber year after year.

    'Awesome' and 'badass'...
I myself never use them, as I never got in the habit of saying them, but I will tolerate them, as I must, given their ubiquity.

My patience wears a bit thin though when I hear the former with 'sauce' as in 'awesome sauce' (meaning 'awesome-icity'),
and the latter in its noun form, as in 'badassery.'

It's just debasement, is what it is, this "tumorization" of language, at this speed.

Re: What is it with 'badass' and 'awesome'??

I think I've used both "awesome" and "badass" to describe certain G's in some of my past posts. Just part of the unconscious slang from my younger days I guess. One or both of those terms still may pop in my thoughts every time I put on my GW5000 or my MRG1000, or any number of others.

Re: What is it with 'badass' and 'awesome'??

Like one other post above, I've never used the words "awesome" or "badass" to describe any thing or situation. There are plenty of other words I can use that just work better (for me) to convey the intent of what I'm saying. But so what, right?
