I think the G-Shock is not really a status symbol for money but it is one for a state of mind: Always ready for anything that might come, I'm tough enough.
It can also be a status symbol within the closer G-Shock circles. If I meet someone with a limited edition Frog and I have a lowly run of the mill 6900 on my wrist, guess who has the higher status or gets more attention?
But the way I meant it in the survey was indeed as money status symbol, what watches almost always represent. So I'm not surprised to see the result.
Since the question isn't actually about "Atomic", "Solar", just about the why for G-Shocks, all or any G-Shocks, I'll just say that for me it's a matter of:
1. Durability (All are good and tough/resistant to knocks/water, etc,)
2. Value (The price is traditionally reasonable, like a Volkswagon is supposed to be.)
3. Looks (They all have a certain black look, sporting look, adventure look, which suits my style sometimes. The look is supposed to be less flashy and practical too. So that's kind of a state of mind or image thing.)
Value, certainly. But Volkswagen? I know why you said "supposed to be". A normal VW Golf will set you back EASILY $30000 in Germany now. Nothing "Volk" about it anymore. It really sucks.
Looks. Less flashy is true about not even half of the G-Shock range I'd say. By definition a watch that doesn't fit under the cuff is flashier. If it is a 50x50x17mm monster in yellow, green or pink with contrasting writing over it, I'd call that rather flashy.
But at least one has the choice. And as we can see many members here go to great lengths to stealth their Gs. I only have one yellow G and I love it. I wear it with a colorful t-shirt or polo and with yellow and blue sneakers. Very flashy. What I've never tried is to wear a completely black outfit and then wear a colorful watch with it. Would probably work well.

OK, qualifications then.
I guess I'm thinking more of what kind of G-Shocks I prefer and also the way I see them as a whole. As in not so flashy. Also When I speak of not flashy, I am thinking more of the lack of color in the average G-Shock. Black to me is not flashy and that is more the average color of G-Shocks. Anything with a silver or gold band (and cased) like some guys always wear is more of a flash type look to various degrees. I wear that stuff too. Seikos for instance. I wear stainless steel sometimes but never gold. Sure anything in bright colors the way some other guys go is flashy too, albeit in a different way. Simply a monster size watch like a Riseman or Frogman or MudMan, those have heavy wrist draw, but in a way not flashy in an color sense. I'd say more "macho", Uberman than flashy. Or maybe in some cases it's more "make believe" macho. I try not to push the macho thing too much personally. If you push the macho thing too much, people think you're going to give them a karate chop or something.
I see them as less flashy and less pretentious or not at all. It's a side of watches that I like sometimes. I see G-shocks as that way for the ones I wear, and for lots of the other ones I don't even.
P.S. For Volkswagens, sure, supposed to be. You know the image of the People's Car and all of that. My Grandfather always had his green mid-70's Beatle. I drive one now. I'd like to replace it with another. It's a GTI, but a 1996 one.
Thanks. Qualifications are always much appreciated by a critical critter such as myself. :)
I see your point now.
P.S.: Käfer ist Legende!
why G-Shock? They're functional, durable, and affordable. No other words can describe G-Shock better than that.
I decided to buy my first G when my son introduced one in the family. He loves to play basketball and go out skateboarding. The many bumps and falls he experienced the watch survived them all. Of course with its 200WR, I though this is the right watch for me too. I got 9 now in my collection. The toughness and dependability of G-Shock is well worth the price.;-)
