    The allure of gold...

To all owners of gold watches, what made you decide to get a gold watch? If there were two choices of the same model – one in stainless steel and the other in gold (yellow, white, rose, whatever), why did you decide on the gold version?

Aside from the obvious answer of personal preference, were there any other reasons that swayed your decision to go for gold? For example, retains its value better than stainless; easier to maintain; more scratch resistant, etc. Please elaborate.

I’m thinking about buying a rose gold watch and wanted to know how others came to their decision. Thanks.

I don't have a gold watch, but I've tried a few on. What you're getting for the extra money is:

    * Weight, solid 18K gold case watches are dense and feel awesome because of that.
    * Flash, it's shiny and has a rich colour that's not the ubiquitous lustre of stainless steel.
    * It shouts "Me Rich!"
On leave 'til mid June to finish a degree I hate in order to do something I like.

For me, it's just a question of if I can afford it. You are usually talking of at least $4K, and those acquisitions are only once in awhile for me--when money is good.

So what difference does it make, whether it's 20 minutes or 20 years, since neither amounts to the faintest echo of the tiniest whisper in the thunder of time.

Isn't gold more inert? Shouldn't it retain its luster longer? I honestly don't know anything on the subject, wouldn't mind some insight myself.

Gold is the material of the iconic "dress watch".
I don't wear one frequently, but it's nice to have that option.

    It's gold. :)
Aside from the metallurgic properties I like the following.
1: Appearance after time: as long as they are cared for properly gold watch will always look good.
2: Typically only used in top tier watches: I've seen a few homage watches done in gold, but for the most
part it's only used in the top watches.
3: Intrinsic value: If the watch becomes scrap, gold still has value, all others are practically worthless.

    Regards,

    Mike

I think gold goes in trends and my generation (I'm 31) isn't into it at all. I would take stainless over gold every time. Platinum and white gold seem more popular for people my age.

The answer really depends on the watch. Some styles look better in gold while others are best left in stainless steel. And I happen to like a combination of gold and stainless in some watches. Value retention is or should be a small part of the purchase decision.

After slipping on a few hundred or so, there's just something about the 'feel'. But, there're out of
    my range.
