Baume & Mercier Classima Exec. 10038 - runs fast and other issues

I got this watch just a week ago from Amazon because it was the best price-- just under $4k for a watch with a list price of $5400. Well, it seems to running very fast-- 12 to 25 seconds per day, and the Annual Calendar did not adjust to July 1 properly. It seems the time stopped at around 12:30am. When I fixed the time in the morning it switched to the 1st. Clearly, the watch has some functional problems, but I am very upset that such an expensive watch would have these issues when it is brand new.

It has the two year warranty from Amazon, but I really don't want to send it away and wait 6 weeks. I plan to take it to a watch repair shop here in NYC.

Anyway, it is a beautiful watch and I truly hope I can get it fixed quickly and cost effectively.

Does anyone out there have any similar experiences or advice?

There's no shortage of advice around this place. Price does not assure quality and reliability.

Why do you say that? Do you think Baume & Mercier is not a good brand? What would you recommend?

Do a search, there's more than enough positive things said about Baume.

Exchange it for the same watch. B&M is a fine entry to mid level lux brand. Sounds like you just got a bad or previously damaged example, happens to the best of them at some point, a little more so when buying grey market.

There is nothing wrong with B&M. Unfortunately this things shouldn't happen, but they do, no matter the brand or price. I've already got my part of it - not with B&M - and I understand perfectly your deception. I suppose an exchange would be the way to go. Just my opinion.

B&M is fine and that's a beautiful watch, but they don't make what goes inside. For purposes of most Swiss watches, the strength of the brand name will have no effect on the quality of the movement.

Anyway, an exchange is probably best.

Let me see if I understand your concerns correctly:

The watch gains between 12 and 25 seconds? So one day it could be 15, the next 24? If there's that much variation, then that could be a real problem. If it's consistently +15 (or +20, whatever), on the other hand, it could just be regulated cheaply and easily.

As per the date change: so the watch stopped in the middle of the night? But, after winding it again, it did switch over on its own, correct?

If that's correct, that may not be a big concern. Watches are more prone to dying during a date change, annual calendars perhaps more so (or maybe not, but it's possible). You may want to do a power reserve test and see if you can get the manufacturer's specs.
