    The case for chapter rings.

This is probably a rather mundane question, but I am curious what folks think about chapter rings. Seems like all of my favorite Seiko's have them. Breitling has them on most of their models. There are truly iconic Rolex's and Omega's that are without. Most of the micro brew divers do not have them, which makes me think they are likely expensive to produce in small quantities. In many cases, moving the second/minute markers to an angled chapter ring can allow you to create a less cluttered dial. Discuss.

I think they are mostly just for looks, rather then function, with the exception of some tachy's and a few specialized watches, perhaps.

I like the way they look, but I could see how some people would think they add unnecessary activity and busy up a dial.
    Regards.

It wasn't until this thread that I realized how much I can't stand a watch with a chapter dial. At least now I understand why I don't like a watch on first sight.

I love em'!! Like already mentioned, it takes some of the clutter off the dial. And some look really good!!

It of course depends on the watch, but in most cases I much prefer them.

With a dive watch especially, I love the way they provide a transition from dial to bezel, joining everything together as one piece rather than dial | bezel.
Alongside that they obviously give you an accurate minute reading and shift the clutter of the markers from being directly on the dial itself.

Re: The case for chapter rings.

The first example is not a chapter ring but an internal rotating bezel. My favourite watch, my Sinn 142, has on, and I really like these.

I also like chapter rings with minute and second markers over dials that only have hour markers, like on many classical dive watches. I usually don't like it when markers are duplicated on the chapter and dial, because of the gap and especially when they're not perfectly aligned.

It's a cheap watch, but I have a Timex Expedition with a chapter ring, and the luminous hour markers are set inside little "alcoves" within the chapter ring. I think that is a nice effect! I wish that other watchmakers would do something like that--and yes, I think they do help to make the dial look less cluttered.

Hadn't really thought about whether I like or dislike them in general, but now that you ask...I mostly like them. I looked at my wrist and sure enough the watch I'm wearing has them and I really like this Victorinox Ambassador...hours only on the dial, minutes and markers on the chapter ring...

And that watch in the first picture - I really like the looks of that! Have to check that one out...

Re: The case for chapter rings.

To my eye they detract from both aesthetics and legibility.

You could put the markers on the dial... or you could make the dial smaller (and the minute hand shorter, usually), and add this little elevated angled ring where the outer dial used to be, and then put the markers on that ring...

The second option seems more complicated with nothing gained.

Consider this watch as an example (picture borrowed from timefactors.com). The dial (and minute hand) go right out to the bezel, nothing in between. Legible and aesthetically clean.
