    A Closet Quartz Lover

After looking at my current collection and incoming I've come to the realization that I may be a closet quartz lover. It didn't happen on purpose and I think it's more of a lifestyle choice. I've had Marathons, Longines, Bernhardts, Boschetts, and multiple Seiko's that have all been automatic, but have left the nest for some reason. My two latest autos left me for my current quartz Seamaster that's incoming. That's not to say that I don't like automatic watches and actually all of them on my short list are auto's. I'm not able to wear a watch at work though so the grab and go convenience of a quartz is just what I need. My next purchase is probably going to be a TSAR, but it's only because I need a good quartz beater that I can wear while I'm working in the yard. I really do like mechanical watches and have owned many over these past few years, but somehow my collection is getting more and more quartz watches in it without me knowing . Plus there's something nice about looking down at a quartz watch and knowing that the time is right and is within 1-2 seconds a month. I know there's not a whole lot of love on the forum for quartz watches, but to all my quartz loving friends out there (are there any?), I just wanted to say:

Hello, my name is Matt, and I like quartz watches.

I don't understand the hate towards quartz here. Quartz watches are 10x more convenient and better timekeepers. Autos require service, extra care, etc., that can cause major headaches.

That said, some of us like seeing the smooth sweeping hand of an automatic- have to admit that's my main reason.

Is this a 12-step program towards self realization of some internal flaw? Or perhaps a formal coming out proclamation? Have your told your friends and family yet?

    Benzinger Custom Skeletonized Star movement.

So what difference does it make, whether it's 20 minutes or 20 years, since neither amounts to the faintest echo of the tiniest whisper in the thunder of time.

There's nothing wrong with quartz. My collection is split pretty evenly between auto and quartz. Some days I want to see the sweeping second hand and marvel at the engineering that went into it. Other days I just don't feel like winding and setting an auto and one of the many quartz watches gets the call.

I have to admit that I will not own a watch that is not an automatic other than a G-Shock. For me, it is a combination of the intricacies of the movements and the fluid sweep of the second hand. I just don't seem to have the same passion towards quartz as I do automatics. It is not that there is anything wrong with quartz, they just don't intrigue me the way a well made automatic does.

I love quartz watches, and i may sell all my auto's,I don't even wear them anymore.Keeping them wound,or adjusting the time all the time just got old for me.I was never a closet quartz lover..I do not like simple minded people who think auto's are better than a quartz watch..I do not mind people's opinions, but i don't wanna hear that they are a better watch..You will lose..hehehe

I feel much the same way. But I consider this to be a bit of a hang-up that's not really logical. I don't feel that automatics are better time-keepers than quartz. But I do think there is something viseral about them that appeals to me.

For anyone who prefers quartz, I actually envy you. You have so many options at great price points. Heck, when it comes to chronographs, the love of automatic movements can be really expensive. There are times when I wish I could forget how I feel about autos...

    Try this one:

Casio Men's G-Shock Atomic Tough Solar Watch

It takes all the hassle out of owning a watch.

Do you cook all your food in a microwave and only watch movies on your iPhone?

Just kidding - nothing wrong with a quartz watch - my wife wants one.

No really, just kidding. But seriously, I just like harking back to simpler times. It takes about one minute to wind a watch a few times and set it. I actually enjoy it - life runs too fast to not take a minute for a simple pleasure. It may even prolong my life to slow down a bit and besides, the accuracy is fine - I'm not timing the Olympics or anything.

Why do you need a quartz for yard work? I wear a Seiko diver for digging in the yard, washing the cars, cleaning the pool, etc., and it's held up fine for years. I don't baby any of my watches - they're designed for normal use (although I do tend to buy mostly tool watches and their stronger than many dress watches). They all scratch the same and I've never had an automatic fail mechanically.

That being said, I do own a few quartz watches. I say wear what you enjoy (even if autos are better). Oops - again just kidding ....

One of my favorite battery powered watches is my Accutron. Tuning fork, smooth as silk sweeping seconds hand and an intriguing design.
