    Frequent Flyers: Travel watches!

    Hi all,

I'm looking to invest in a watch specifically for travelling with. Requirements? At least a GMT complication, or some variation on the theme.

Only two watches have really jumped out at me, those being:

What do you have for a travelling watch? Any more ideas?

    Cheers,
    Luke

I travel a lot and these are my go-to travel options,

    Chopard Pro One Sport GMT,

It does not have true GMT functionality (slaved 24hr hand, 2nd TZ settable by the bezel only) but it is just so beautiful I could not resist it anyway.
And the 300M WR is an added bonus if you have the option of a dip in the pool/ocean whilst on your travels.

The best travel watches I have, from a functional perspective, are these two,

    and

The true GMT functionality with independent setting of the local (12hr) hour hand is what I appreciate the most in a travel watch.
If one does not want/need more than one TZ on display it is worth checking out the Omega Caliber 8500 range, those offer the option of setting the hour hand in 1hr increments without hacking the watch (and you can 'back hack' the date by doing this as well) which is neat when travelling.

    I have several....

Grand Carrera GMT - great watch, really high quality, GMT is on the rotating disc. I like that it is a 12 hour clock, as opposed to a 24 our GMT function.

Aquaracer Chronotimer - by far, the most practical travel watch I own. Easy to set to different timezones, handles 1/2 hour timezones great, WR to 300m.

    Ball Engineer Diver Worldtimer

Does the half hour changes correctly, it doesn't work well with daylight savings time. I like it anyway!

    Rolex GMT Master IIc 116710
    Omega Aqua Terra 231.10.42.21.02.001
    Cartier Santos 100 XL
    Cartier Roadster Anniversery Blue W6206012
    IWC Ingenieur 323401
Ball Engineer Master II Diver COSC

I don't like to flash expensive watches on travel and I'm always worried mine will get lifted in airport security, customs, the hotel, on the street, etc. So for me, a travel watch has to be cheap but good-looking, wearable with dress or casual, accurate and easy to set. This quartz Junkers is 42 mm by 11 mm and fits under any shirt sleeve and has a separately adjustable GMT:

I know what you mean. This is why I didn't really consider Rolex. The brand is just way too recognisable. Hardly anyone has heard of Glycine or JLC (although, yes, you can probably tell the JLC, at least, is pricey when you look at it).

I should mention I have also entertained the anadigi idea, by looking at both the...

    and the...

Victorinox Chrono Classic XLS MT (cheap option! these can be had for under a grand!):

I would agree with this but it could go not only to inexpensive brands but also relatively unknown brands also. Tag heuer is very well known along with rolex and even jlc to some extent. I would look at a grand seiko like one of these.

    Re: Frequent Flyers: Travel watches!

Firstly, that JLC is simply gorgeous. Secondly, I travel every week, and constantly jump time zones, plus, my home office is in a different time zone altogether. I have an Orient World Timer which I love. I hope to purchase a quality GMT piece (perhaps an Omega) at some point as well.

    With that said...

Perhaps this is sacrilege, perhaps it's just me. But, in the brief moment it take me to look at my watch, determine the time that it is where I am, then look at whatever complication it is to determine an alternate time, well, the fact of the matter is, I instantly calculate said time in my head, far quicker than I can figure by the watch. If I'm in CA, and it's 1100, well, then I know it's 1400 in PA. That simple. With that said, this will by no means diminish my desire to get a good GMT, I simply like the complication, nor does it make meany less enthusiastic for other fine travel watches, whether they be GMT, dual time, etc...

BTW, I do not know much about this piece, but that Chopard above is damn nice. Any idea on the size?

42mm diameter, dont recall thickness but here's a few more pics if it helps,

    On 7.5" wrist,

A small detail I love about this watch is that the cyclops is an integrated part of the crystal, it is not glued on the top/bottom.

My choice would be between the Grand Seiko and the Chopard. Thoough I am leaning more on the GS every time I look at it. What a beautiful timepiece.
