GOOD DESIGN Award for Ahoi from NOMOS Glashütte

The sporty automatic Ahoi watch from NOMOS Glashütte has won the renowned GOOD DESIGN Award — making it the third time in a row for the watchmaking company.

Glashütte, December 2013. The message reached the small watchmaking town of Glashütte in the eastern Ore Mountains near Dresden just before Christmas: Ahoi has won the GOOD DESIGN Award 2013. Only launched this summer, this watch is water-resistant down to 200 meters and still elegant enough to wear in the office.

While Ahoi already won several consumer prizes in Europe this fall, the GOOD DESIGN Award marks a special recognition of the international design community. The Award’s legacy dates back to 1950, when the prize was created byCharles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, and Edgar Kaufmann, Jr. in Chicago. Today it is awarded by the Chicago Athenaeum, the Museum of Architecture and Design, and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.

For NOMOS Glashütte, an independent watchmaking company, it is the third GOOD DESIGN Award in a row— which underlines the company’s strength indesign. The NOMOS classic Tangente won the award in 2012, while in 2011 Zürich received the distinction. “We are aiming to create the most beautiful classic watches — and cases, which complement the fine mechanical movements from our Glashütte workshops,” says Judith Borowski, who is responsible for NOMOS Glashütte’s brand and design. She is celebrating along with the Ahoi designer Thomas Höhnel, whose initial reaction was: “This is like all my Christmases coming at once.”
