    Hamilton X-Wind alternatives

    Hi guys,
I have wanted to get a Hamilton x-wind for a couple of years and am finally ready to pull the trigger. Before I do though I just want to be sure it's the right choice and wondered what you guys think are the best alternatives to consider? I would be willing to stretch the budget to around £1,200 and would consider buying second hand if something really jumps out as an obviously better watch than the x-wind for the money.
Any thoughts or arguments for/against alternatives would be very much appreciated!

    All the best,
    Paul

As an update, one piece of advice from a collegue was to spend a couple of hundred more and buy a 2nd hand Tag Monaco, seemingly on eBay for around £1,500. But with the same 7750 movement and plexi glass instead of sapphire crystal am I really getting a better watch other than the brand name?

"Better" watch? Not mechanically, but I can say as an X-owner of 2 X-winds, that X-winds are not really worth the $. The lume is practically non-existent, and the functions? Well, not really useful.
But of course, they're just there to add to the look.
At least with the Monaco, you're getting a really snazzy design.
    But that's all subjective, yeah?

OK, then how's this for objectivity:
If you ever wanna sell the Monaco, you'll fetch a MUCH higher price (proportionally) than the Hami.

    Re: Hamilton X-Wind alternatives

First, don't do this to yourself! If you have wanted an x-wind for a couple of years and have been building up to purchase, why put yourself in the position to pull the rug out from under you?

Second, X-wind vs Monaco? Not even remotely aesthetically the same, so whatever grabbed you about the X-wind is not likely going to translate in the same desire for the Monaco.

Third, I agree with Chronopolis, the Monaco is the better resale value...but why? Part is the Monaco name, probably the most appreciated Tag among WIS', but most is the fact that you would be buying it second hand, so the initial depreciation is carried by someone else. But, comparing a new watch to a used one is only a valid exercise only if you absolutely do not care that you are buying a second hand watch...and like a used car, all that comes with that.

Fourth, at £1,200 there are TONS of options, but other than the fact that you like the x-wind and price, we have little criteria with which to pose recommendations.

I'd say go with the x-wind, as you have (for some reason) desired it for two years. If you really aren't sure that it is what you want, give us a little more criteria to go on and we will make your head spin with recommendations.

The Monaco uses a 7750? Since when? Mine definitely doesn't.

    Re: Hamilton X-Wind alternatives

Thanks for taking the time to respond guys.
I have a Hamilton khaki king auto and absolutely love it. From what I can gather Hamilton as a brand are really good quality or money. I like the x-wind because of the amount of extra detail compared to my current watch. I also like that it shares a lot of the same "innings" as more expensive watches, like the Monaco. Despite their differences in shape I really like both watches because of how they stand out. Both are quite bold in their own way.
I guess what I'm really looking is something more complicated to compliment my simplistic khaki king. I think for that reason a chrono appeals to me. I also like watches with a black face and silver Bezel, and that come with a leather strap (obviously straps are adjustable but I like a watch that looks good in its initially designed form).

I'm not sure if that's much help in narrowing suggestions down but that's why I like both the x-wind and monaco.

    Re: Hamilton X-Wind alternatives

I think anyone wanting a big statement chrono needs to try this one on.

I think it's the best thing I've tried on at around £1000-£1200

WIS Handbook, Chapter 1, Rules 1 and 2:
    1. Tag Heuer never wins a poll. Should a member feel the need to express the desire to own one, he or she may be subject to ridicule and be ostracized.
    2. Omega wins all polls. Should Omega not be mentioned as a selectable option, it is highly suggested that you still recommend the polling member purchase an Omega, preferably a Speedmaster with hesalite crystal to add extra character and a certain warmess to the dial.

    Thought for the day:
why is it that those with the most to say about watches never have any watches to show?

Where the heck did you guys come up with a Monaco?!
When the OP asked for alternatives, I would guess he meant something remotely similar.
Hmmmm....let's see, the Monaco is square, plexiglass crystal, and a modular chrono. The X-Wind is Big, Round, complicated-looking, and has a 7750. OK, I guess they both tell time

My suggestion is to check out the Swiss Army Victorinox Alpnach. It's Big, Busy, and Well Made

Both the x-wind and monaco have the 7750 movement though, right? So at least that's one similarity! :)

Nope, the Monaco has a Chrono Module on an ETA 2892.
