How much does the usual watch service cost?

They say you are supposed to service your mechanical watch every 3-5 years. How much does this usually cost?

I figure a minimum of $100 US for simple service. If you get into parts replacement it goes up from there. A couple of my antique pocket watches cost $300 each to fix.
I would expect costs at an OEM service center to be higher than this. I use independent watchmakers for the work I need to get done.

Depends completely on the brand and type of watch. Some are cheap, while a chrono Breitling will cost you around $500. Some watches like Cartier are even more.

My personal rule of thumb is at least 10% of the RRP of the watch. ETA-based watches shouldn't be too bad. Others will be more... this assumes it's sent in to the manufacturer's designated service center for a full service.

Re: How much does the usual watch service cost?

I have a guy who does my low end stuff (lube, clean and regulate) for $35-$50. Then I have another guy who does my better stuff, for about $100, (new gaskets, clean, polish, etc.) then I ususally send high end stuff to a specialist, or the factory (Omega, Tag etc.) and with a few parts that is usually about $300. So I guess it varies based on the the level of service you want.

Okay, I just had my Rolex 1680 Submariner done. Granted, the watch is 36 years old, but the service was $1,200. If you are looking at Rolex, Omega, Breitling, etc, you should figure on $500 as a starting point.

as the price of the watch goes up, so does the service cost. but with omega and rolex, its what you can get during the service that really matters. while it can be high for a full service on an older piece, its reasonable for a newer one. I sent a submariner in that was beaten pretty bad. rolex refinished the case, overhauled the movement, replaced the bracelet, installed a new crystal, replaced the dial and hands plus a new crown. while it was expensive, I did get back a watch that was new again. omega offers the same type of service.
