My FIRST purchase! JLC vs GO

    Hey all,

So I'm a 19-year-old who's going to be a sophomore in college this fall, and last year as a high school graduation gift I got this Tag Heuer Link Automatic Chronograph (pic), I wasn't really a watch guy before, but since then I've grown to appreciate them, the history of the craft, and the mechanics behind them a lot. I am looking to make my first "big" purchase and am seeking some advice.

First of all, would the Tag be the kind of watch someone such as myself might wear daily to class/social events, or is it a bit much? I am aware that the Link is not considered by most WIS to be anything special even within the Tag line.

Relatedly, I am interested in something dressier with a leather strap from the JLC Master line or something from GO:
JLC - the Master Control or the Ultra Thin.
GO - the Senator Sixties or the Senator Hand Date.
Any help out there for a budding watch enthusiast as to my best bet? I'm looking to spend around $5-7k for something that I can wear daily or in rotation with my Tag. Unless these options are too dressy for daily wear...

    Thanks!

A TAG is absolutely appropriate for a college student. No luxury watch states "sophomore" better than a TAG.

Of the JLC or GO, pick the one you think looks better. Both are great watch makers with top of the line movements. Personally, I would pick the JLC Ultra Thin Moon just because of style, nothing more.

As long as a watch is not gold, you can easily use them as daily wearers.

What? Not sure if sarcasm or trying to poke fun at him.

I'm in college too and if I were to get one of those I would get the Master Control. All of your options are great choices though so pick whichever you like best and looks best on your wrist.

Just trying make a little joke about TAG's in general.

But, at 19 years old and already considering a JLC or GO, someone is already giving him really good advice or he is wise beyond his years.

Haha, I am very much aware of the bad rep Tag gets, but don't you think I'd be better off actually wearing the darn thing rather than letting it sit or trying to sell it?

You have taste and discernment beyond your years. The TAG is a fine watch for daily wear. Both JLC and GO represent some of the best watches in their price range. They are classic, stylish, and not boring. They are fine instruments. I just recently purchased a Hand Date, and I am very happy with it. I could have just as easily chosen the JLC Master Control. I have very high regard for them both.

Bang the heck out of the TAG - that’s what its for.

As far as the JLC vs GO decision, I suggest the JLC. Both are great watches, but for whatever reason the JLC's have better residual/resale value. As you sink deeper into watch insanity like the rest of us, resale/flip value becomes a big factor as well.

I don't think either is too dressy for daily wear. The Senator 60's interestingly styled numbers kind of straddle the dress watch/casual watch boundary. The master control or ultra thin are a bit dressier, but honestly if you can acquire such a fine timepiece, you should wear at least a blazer and slacks often enough to do justice to the watch!

    I suggest a JLC.

But, not one of the Master series, but the Reverso.
