I in general don't mind it, but I think the best done have 1. No date window ring or cyclops or anything accentuating the date; 2. matching dial color date wheel.
It only really works where it kinda blends into the dial, as it doesn't replace a hour marker, or meant to add to symmetry like the 3 o'clock date wheel generally does. It should try to blend in seamlessly into the dial.
