    Watches & Las Vegas, Connection?

I don't get out much. Is there a particular reason Las Vegas is so often mentioned in some association with watches?

I generally associate Vegas with gaming, but I've seen several threads and posts discussing watch-buying in Las Vegas. Just now, I looked at a random new-watch listing on Ebay that sweetens the deal with $300 discount coupon to be used in any number of Vegas AD's.

Is there a horology convention or something that naturally associates watches and Las Vegas? Or is it a demographic kinda thing. Money flows through Las Vegas, but it flows through other vacation cities as well. What's the connection?

Sorry for such a trivial question, but where I live it's rare to hear Las Vegas mentioned at all. Reading about watches on the Internet, I seem to see Vegas referenced more often than New York or Geneva. I can't quite figure out why.

I guess the first thing you do is to buy a 18K Rolex after the big win in a Casino?

Or there is also a possibility that the people living around L. Vegas are such hillbillies, that a first-watch purchase is high on the list?

    Thanks Janne,

I can't quite picture Vegas hillbillies, but the references I've seen generally pertain to someone visiting Las Vegas to buy a watch. The Ebay seller offering a $300 Vegas AD coupon with any on-line watch purchase was located in New York!? Why would an international buyer purchasing from an international on-line seller be interested in a Vegas coupon? Has Las Vegas become the seat of watch-dom, WUS-dom, or WIS-dumb?

Could it be that Nevada has no salestax or something like that?

Just to clarify, the above pic (stolen from the web, has not much to do with the post. Just hows some guys that do not own a watch, but are going to Vegas to get one.

Vegas is the Capitol of Stupidity and Cleverness.

You are Stupid if you travel there to gamble away your hard earned money, and Clever if you own a Casino...

las vegas and nevada as a whole are having a very rough go of it fiscally. they were very hard hit by the recession. this watch sales promotion appears to be novel a way to entice people with disposable income to visit the state and spend some cash. just a guess.

Vegas is one of the best shopping destinations for anything high end including watches, there are more watch stores on the strip than anywhere else I can think of, it has the biggest watch store in the world at the Forums shop mall.

I used to work in a large corporate tower staffed with a couple thousand guys in their 20s - and yes, this is the classical story behind all the 26 year olds with a Rolex on their wrist.

Vegas has many high end boutiques. No sales tax, big winners, ample amounts of alcohol and an aura of an adult Garden of Eden.

Call me a geek, but every time I see/hear "Las Vegas" I think of the Las Vegas algorithm

Las Vegas do have a sales tax, I believe it is 8.1%. There is no state income tax though.
