Never discuss religion and politics. Should probably add "watches" as well. Best to stay away and save these arguments for like-minded WIS's.
I glance at my watch a thousand times a day, but I still don't know what time it is...

What you do is turn to his girlfriend and show her your watch and then say "how do you like this darlin?"

Just use a little Judo maybe a tad tae-kwon-do and finish the person off! Alternatively two quick silenced shots to the chest area will probably be sufficient to end the argument.

4 years from now I can cell my $3,000 watch for about $2,200. You can cell your $500 cell phone for a bag of chips and a hotdog.

Sometimes... I launch into a geeky polemic about how it's an expression of the highest level of technology and precision from another age, from before we'd surpassed the physical properties of the materials we used things to get into the electrical and the chemical, so the workmanship and precision of the components was essential to the functionality of the device and the more work a human put into the device the better it functioned. It's also a symbol of human ingenuity and a reminder to me as a designer that until my work is on the level of the craft that I'm wearing on my wrist, I shouldn't stop honing my craft. And, the value to me is more symbolic of an era and an ethos and it's a talisman more than a timepiece.

(I usually get halfway done before their eyes glaze over, and they don't even bother to talk sense with me after that. The only time I got all the way through was with a little hottie wearing a vintage Bulova movement around her neck like an amulet, and well, that was different.)

Other times... I say 'when you're in a meeting, pulling out your phone to check the time is so amateur. I just glance down at my wrist. Like a BOSS.'

Just three words. I have to admire your economy of language.

I have better things to argue with people about than this issue.
