My brother (he wears an el-cheapo Casio) hit me with that same question. I didn't say anything, I just slapped my UTS on his wrist (ok, it's not quite a $3k watch) and now he understands. I had a hard time getting it back.

Equating a mobile phone to a pocket watch for the sake of your pro-watch argument is ridiculous.
A pocket watch does not make/receive calls and e-mail, read pdf files, keep a calendar schedule, provide alerts for meetings, when to make a call or any other deadline, act as a hard drive to transfer files physically or even send files wirelessly when on the move.

It also functions perfectly well for telling the time.

As for the original question, well its tough to compare it to cell phones. A 500$ cellphone does indeed do a LOT more than a 50$ one whereas a 5000$ mechanical 3 hand is not going to do anywhere near what a 100$ Casio can do. So that argument isn't really valid IMO. In my experience, there are people who get it and people who don't. Not just with watches. There are people who in general believe in not having any passion or hobby, and just getting the cheapest serviceable option possible and making do with that. You cannot in any way justify the hobby to those. However, there are people such as mentioned in previous posts, who are willing to put down large amounts for other hobbies and passions of theirs. Its easier to explain to those ppl and its just a matter of translating your passion and love to them and a lot of times, you can actually get through to those folks.
I don't know if I believe that. It would take a Vulcan or a robot to make ONLY utilitarian choices in life. Look at someone closely enough and he or she has made some decision completely irrationally and made sacrifices to acheive it, whether it's having a big family, a particular car, tattoos, living in a certain neighborhood, etc.

No offense intended. Strictly from a first impression standpoint in a non-creative, "corporate" environment, headphones appear less professional rather than more. I worked in advertising for 16 years, but I was an uptight account guy. We understand each other well :)

Come to think of it, my boss listens to Laser Light classical CDs in his office, ever so quietly, from time to time...

100% rational decision-making would mean everyone walking around with $50 digital quartz Timex or Casio watches.

I was at a pool party with some friends. One guy said that his cell phone was way more accurate than my watch.
I tossed his phone and my watch in the pool....................................... my watch still kept great time.

    That is priceless!

And, completely true. A vintage mechanical watch with only 30M water-resistance is an absolute tank compared to the average so-called Smartphone.
