They do it too at the shoe stores with commissioned sales people. I'm 42 yrs. old. I've taken a size 10 shoe for the better portion of my life. I don't need to be sat down and measured. Do you have my size or not?

That said, I completely agree with the OP. If they ask, I'll always say "yes".
If they don't ask. That's not too cool IMO. Especially leaving a finger print or smudge on my crystal. I don't know how many times I'd have to ask for a cloth to polish my own crystal afterwards. The un-asked for, no-brainer advise givers are my least favorite. After playing with the pushers on my chronograph "Make sure you run the sub dial for seconds, using the big seconds hand drains the battery faster ."- "It was doing that before you started playing with it.""Could I have a watch crystal cloth please?"

I'm with the sales person on this one - a few minutes measuring the lugs - even if the customer is very sure will save many returns.

Most customer won't know the size - then there will be a percentage that quote a size but are wrong - then what I estimate to be the smallest group - those that know and are right!

Doesn't bother me at all but it would depend on what the salesman said after looking the watch over. I've gotten a kind comment or two over the years on watches that were not exactly high end. Indeed I wore an Orient Automatic power reserve into a higher-end jewlery store and the salesman said he knew the brand, recognized and like the watch. It wasn't even a Star model! If I detected any condescension in a salesman's voice I would simply move on. There are enough other hungry watch sellers out there.

I handed my 4 month old son overthe counter @ the AD on the weekend, it kept them busy while I set my Tag Heuer 500m Aquaracer on the counter and tried on an Omega PO & SMP....

    You could try that?

I'm not too bothered so as long as the sales in one way or another indicates that he/she's interested in looking my watch over. A "may I" or wave of a hand at least. It's an etiquette issue and sales, or anybody for that matter, should know better

Especially if you have it laying out on the counter. If I was selling watches and had the "bug", I'd want to look as well. I would probably gesture to his watch and ask if he minded, but that's just me. I've had them look at mine before and it didn't bother me at all. He actually handled mine more delicately than I do.

Yes, it does bug me a bit. Even more so if they don't ask first.

Now, I just put away my watch before trying something on.
