    Jared - is this normal?

Went to Jared, an AD, asked about checking something on a PO (open the case), they said they would only send it back to Omega and not do anything there even though they have a shop...

    Anyone else run into this?

I'm presuming it was your PO you wanted opened?
Most likely they don't want to open it in case anything goes wrong down the line and you need warranty service. Then they can't be blamed for doing anything wrong.

Ive experienced the same thing... excpet for when i brought mine to the boutique with an on site "watchmaker/technician" on hand. Generally most AD would send it back incase anyhting went wrong they wouldnt want to be responsible.

    If I'm not mistaken...

only Omega authorized service centers are allowed to pop the backs of the Omega watches without voiding any of their warranties. If anybody else (AD's included) opens up the watches, the factory warranty is then null and void.

Certainly would not be normal if I were in charge.

    Cheers,

It's a practical consideration even with a quartz. As soon as the watch is opened the water resistance capability of the watch becomes doubtful and with a mechanical there is also the possibility and danger of dirty ingress causing issues with the movement.

I was referring more to the automatic movements. People are mainly after the automatic movements for "frankenwatches". Quartz? Not so much.
